We were lucky to catch up with Petty Murphy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Petty , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I have been disrespected by so many people because of who I am and what I stand for and especially in the entertainment business. I have been lied on, I have been poked fun of by people who are clowns at the end of the day and those types of people have the audacity to say “You’re a comedian, you should be able to take a joke.” & It’s true but I can’t be a comedian everyday 24/7 cause at the end of the day I am still an human being and I do have a life and I still have to deal with reality when I am not on the stage.
Petty , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got in the entertainment industry through a dare and ever since then I have studied and learned and dedicated to understanding what my purpose is not only just in the entertainment industry but in life as well and when Covid 19 hit in 2020 I had to learn how to cope with not only being able to not do live shows and working from home and being confined due to the restrictions but I had to get really creative and my creative mind said to start a podcast and on April 4, 2020 The Petty Murphy Project was born and it has opened a lot of doors for me and provided a platform for anyone to come on the show and showcase their talents or have a general conversation about life.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal in my creative journey is to fulfill my late grandmother’s premonition which was to see one of her children or grandchildren do something great in life that it would change the world and seeing this woman work very hard to provide for my family and myself and understanding her journey in life fuels me to steady keep working hard and remembering the words she told my mom & her siblings which was passed down to me and my siblings
“Get Something Behind Your Last Name Besides Your Last Name.” And that’s what drives me in this journey I am on.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is that you get to show the work that you are doing and share it with the world and being able to connect with like minded people who understand the assignment and standing on business.
