We were lucky to catch up with Kat Harrison recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kat, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I always grew up fearful of the future and what it would entail. I lived in a survival mindset where I believed I had to run my body into the ground and withstand all sorts of abuse along with it in order to be worthy of a paycheck, a place to live, and even love. I worked 80-hour work weeks just so I could stay afloat on my bills and operate a thriving business. I showed up every day with a smile and work ethic unlike a lot of people out there because I was raised in environments that taught me I needed to survive under any circumstance. Doing things the “easy way” was not written in my program. So when I decided to quit my job to seek inner peace and stillness, it was the biggest risk I had ever taken in my life. Not only financially, but emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually. I did not come from a background that ever spoke about spirituality. I only knew the Bible-belt religion I grew up learning. When I got to a point in my life where my soul could not bear the beating I was giving it every day by going to a job that ran me dry, I became awake to spirituality. Letting go of all of my old beliefs and physical security will always be the biggest marker and turning point in my life. I still take risks each day that I grow and become more in touch with myself, but now I don’t live in fear. I believe nothing is worth having if there isn’t risk involved. The seed does not grow by staying in its outer casing. It must break free from its shell and push itself through the dirt before it can ever see the light, but when it does, the possibilities for growth are endless.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kat and I’m a spiritual/trauma-informed podcast host. I got into the business because as I began my spiritual awakening path, I didn’t have many places to go for support in the beginning. There was so much information on the internet about spirituality, but none of it talked about the harder parts of the journey. Especially for people with heavy trauma. Everything was “light and love,” but what I was feeling was a whole lot of personal upheaval and pure inner destruction at times. I started my podcast because I knew there had to be other people experiencing the same thing. A true, spiritual awakening can make you feel like you’re dying because truly a piece of you IS dying and becoming reborn again. I use my podcast as a healing tool for myself, as well as a container to make others feel safe knowing they aren’t alone in this. I believe my trauma gave me the gift of being able to help others. I am always open and honest, and I use that vulnerability as a way of making others feel safe in their own vulnerable spaces. I think that is what sets me apart from others. A lot of people hold onto their stories like they are something to be ashamed of or kept private because God forbid someone find out and think negatively of them. I think this is a shame. So many of us have been through horrific circumstances and have found ways to survive and even THRIVE in these environments, coming out on top no matter what life presented us. If we all started sharing these stories about ourselves, we would find so many other people out there who have been through the same thing or something similar. We could begin helping and supporting each other instead of running away or feeling disconnected from society. With my podcast and my classes, I help people regain their own personal power by honoring their stories and recognizing their own strength in them. Our world has tried so hard to keep us separated from each other and even separated from ourselves. I believe we need that connection now more than ever and it’s showing more every day. I truly believe if we could embrace those shadowy stories of our past, we could use them to help build a stronger community together and ultimately create a new world geared toward connection and love instead of war and separation. I’m proud knowing what I stand for, and I think as the podcast grows, we are going to create an expansive community that far surpasses our close community. We will change the world.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
So many lessons to unlearn… The biggest one is the belief that I have to look outside of myself for healing and wholeness. We’ve been taught to seek prescription drugs, doctors, therapists, life coaches, diet fads, cryo therapy, etc to feel healed and whole. Even though I do believe all of those people and practices play very important roles, ultimately the real healing will never happen until we learn to look within ourselves. 99% of diseases today are caused by stress, and we still continue to reach for a cure-all pill that doesn’t require us to make any personal changes in our lives. We’re never going to find that cure if we don’t learn to cope with our stress and regulate our Nervous Systems. This has been an up-and-down wave for me. Since awakening to my own power, I have healed numerous physical diseases and illnesses, along with eliminating virtually all pain in my body and I did this simply through meditation. I shouldn’t say “simply,” because it was and is still really hard sometimes. Sitting in silence with an ADHD mind that won’t stop looping is not an easy feat, but once I overcame the looping, I found real inner peace and infinite healing opportunities. Meditation has changed my life, but it has brought a lot of relearning along with it. Sitting still seemed counterproductive at first because as I stated before, I believed I needed to move a-mile-a-minute to feel “worthy,” but once I found the strength to sit my butt down, it was game over. I found my true potential in those moments of silence, and I am still blown away by the things I continue to learn about myself each time I sit in meditation.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I am an avid reader and forever a student before teacher. Looking outside of Google and picking up real, physical books on spirituality and philosophy has the power to change lives. We live in a technological world full of convoluted information that seems to be geared toward making us believe everything in the world is bad for us. We forget there is a vast array of information readily available to us passed down by ancient cultures, world-renowned philosophers, and people like Nikola Tesla who spent their lives dedicated to proving the improbable probable. We should never dismiss the wisdom of our ancestors who learned the way of the elements long before computers came along and made us believe science is the only way of finding the truth. There is endless information that exists that shares the real truth of the world such as the teachings of Eckhart Tolle, Caroline Myss, Michael Singer, Michael Newton, Dolores Cannon, Sadhguru, and many, many more.
