We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tori Rohen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tori below.
Hi Tori, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success can look different for anyone! The person sitting next to me probably would define success in a different way than I would. Especially when you own your own business success can come in many different forms. In my business, being successful is all about what my clients are not only saying to me, but to the others around them who are seeing the photos that they share! Being able to have clients not only love the photos I take, but to talk highly of my photos to others is something that I would use to measure my success in my business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a wedding and couples photographer in Charleston South Carolina. I got into photography November of 2020, still in college but decided to try something new! I used my mom’s old camera and started asking people to let me take photos for free! I got into weddings by second shooting a few weddings and really felt a passion for capturing such a special day for people! I’d probably describe my work as candid, storytelling, authentic! I really strive to make my sessions fun and really capture the couples true form of love!
I actually just moved to Charleston from Michigan, and being able to move my business states away is something I am very proud of! I didn’t know what was in store for me here in Charleston but my career has just blossomed and I am loving it here!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I never really saw myself as artistic, growing up I never was able to draw good, I played in the band at school but nothing too crazy to consider myself an artist. It’s been really fun the past 4 years to see myself as an artist by using the camera! It’s so fun to be able to be creative with your eye and how you see the world and couples and love. I’d probably say the most rewarding part is when another photographer looks at my work and feels inspired by it! I get inspired by photographers all the time and if I somehow inspire someone else, it’s super encouraging!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Since moving to a new state and moving my business I had to really push to get my name out there. Photography is already a saturated market, so I had to think about what makes me different!
Social media has changed the game, and most people would probably agree with that. When it comes to getting clients, social media is how I do it. I show up almost everyday on Instagram and post a photo or a reel or even just jump on my stories and talk. I think it’s really important to not only show your work but show more of your personality on social media, it gives your clients not only a face to see but be able to see your personality! Facebook has also been a big one for me, because I’m a wedding photographer, joining wedding groups and posting in there and helped get clients as well.
