We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Benedict. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Sarah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
Getting my first “job” as a tarot reader and reiki practitioner was actually quite the journey. I think it simply began in making an effort to embody strengths and gifts I realized I had. It started with this awareness that many people I encountered sought help from me. I remember hearing at a young age that I was the “go to friend” to talk to if someone needed clarity on something. After hearing this for many years I marked this up as a strength and felt it was probably an aspect of myself that could be utilized in a beneficial way. I also was deeply in touch with my spiritual side at a young age. I was always so curious about what more was out there, what was there that can’t be seen but felt. I realized it was a gift to feel the unknown. Not many people I talked to could or even desired to feel or understand the unknown, but I was so curious, and I loved having a playful demeanor around it. Not knowing was fun and the process of understanding something unknown became even more fun. To turn this strength and gift into a reality, I laid a solid foundation by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in psychology. I remember having such a blast learning about the mind and psychology. It gave the structure I needed to express the things I was seeing energetically happening in others yet didn’t have the words before to say what was going on. This degree led me to landing a unique position in neurofeedback therapy where I was introduced to alternative healing approaches and holistic mental health practices. My time as a neurofeedback therapist inspired me to delve deeper into the field, prompting me to pursue a master’s degree in counseling. This training was tough and very emotional but equipped me with tools to guide individuals on their personal growth journeys through my unique lens. After receiving this training, I was making progress in becoming a private practice counselor and planned on continuing neurofeedback. However, fate had a surprise in store for me. My workplace closed due to my boss’s retirement. My plan was kind of shot in having the resources to continue down the path I was on. I also had become married and was having children during these years of training and my priorities of working long hours and long days was diminishing. I really wanted more freedom and more time with my children. So, I took advantage of my situation. Rather than letting uncertainty derail me, I seized the opportunity and became an entrepreneur. I drew on my training, my experience in neurofeedback therapy and exposure to various alternative healing modalities and decided to create Sky Visions. This was my creative container now, a home where I could pour all my mystical beliefs, formal education, and my God given gifts into to allow me to continue serving others and live my purpose. Sky Visions quickly gained traction thanks to social media and collaborations with fellow holistic practitioners in Dallas. The initial popularity was very exciting. I remember feeling very lucky on how I was being reached out to for sessions and invited to work at big events. It seemed so effortless and in total flow. It was most definitely an aligned move on my end to work this way and has solidified a very strong word of mouth reputation I now hold.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Yes, so to share my most current situation in life and business I have to start with how my family and I made a big decision to move to no other place than the state of Alabama. This truly felt like the unknown, which excited me. I had never even visited Alabama, so when my family was presented with an opportunity to move there, I felt a bit caught off guard but open. I had just made connections in the Dallas area when I decided to launch Sky Visions and moving made me think my new momentum would be disrupted beyond repair at times but the strong pull to move was something I couldn’t deny and so we left. During our first few days here, I decided to explore some children’s parks and that’s what led to a fateful encounter with Kendall Gilchrist. Our meeting quite literally happened by chance. As we struck up a conversation, it quickly became apparent that we shared many common interests, including my work as a tarot reader and reiki practitioner. Kendall’s background in retail, jewelry design and production and her desire to introduce something unique to the community aligned perfectly with my own aspirations, and our ideas snowballed. Together, we envisioned a space that would not only offer metaphysical products and healing services but also provide a haven for individuals seeking spiritual exploration and growth in a community that may have been lacking such opportunities. It was like we were solving a problem in the area, and leaning into my playful nature and personality, this whole thing felt fun! Thus, Kendall created Hesperia Mystic Shoppe. The overwhelming response from the community affirmed that our intuition and alignment on the needs of the community was right, we had tapped into something that resonated deeply with the people of our town and surrounding cities. The success of collaborating and bouncing ideas off each other has led to many more projects she and I have partnered up on now. Kendall and I embarked on another collaboration that merges our shared passions for spirituality, creativity, and craftsmanship. Together, we conceptualized and brought to life The Fool’s Journey jewelry line, a collection that weaves the energies and symbolism of each tarot card in the Major Arcana into 18k gold pendants, each represented by the Roman numeral corresponding to the card. Our collaboration was developed out of a shared desire to offer something truly unique and discreet to wear for the community, a wearable embodiment of the wisdom and transformative journey depicted in the tarot. Drawing on my expertise as a tarot reader and Kendall’s keen eye for design and aesthetics, we crafted each piece to resonate with the essence of its corresponding card. In addition to The Fool’s Journey jewelry line, I’ve also created a series of specialized journals designed to support individuals on their spiritual journeys. These journals serve as tools for strengthening psychic abilities, navigating empathic feelings, and deepening one’s connection with the tarot. The Fool’s Journey and Journals are easily accessible on Amazon.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The hardest time in my life came unexpectedly when my husband, my closest confidant and friend, made the heartbreaking decision to end his life after battling with mental health issues. As someone deeply versed in psychology, holding degrees in the field, having dedicated years to working as an energy healer, and helping literally thousands of clients with their own struggles, I found myself plunged into a state of shock and disbelief. How could someone like me, with all my knowledge and experience, not recognize the signs and intervene in time. Was I too close to a burning fire and not realizing I was getting burned? This loss not only left me feeling devastated but also deeply insecure. I questioned my abilities and my understanding of mental health, my gift in seeing what was coming, my strength in being someone you could confide in and be open with. It all left me grappling with the stark realization that suicidal ideation and completion are far more complex and unpredictable than what I had been taught, what I think anyone even realizes. It prompted me to reflect on how mental health is approached, the limitations of our current systems in detecting suicidal signs, and the lack of adequate support and resources for individuals in crisis, because in all honesty, there was not much I or anyone could do with the things that were noticeable as my husband was a functioning adult. In the complete blur of my grief and confusion, I found myself navigating the daunting role of a lone mother and widow while still striving to not give up on myself and live my purpose in service to others. It was a journey that demanded resilience on every level. Despite my overwhelming pain, I made a conscious decision to turn inward and cultivate a strong foundation for myself. This inward journey became a profound act of self-sourcing, a process through which I learned to draw strength from within and to prioritize my own well-being amidst the chaos. It has been a journey marked by introspection, self-compassion, and a deep commitment to self-care and feeling of all my feelings. Through this experience, I’ve come to understand resilience is not a trait reserved for the extraordinary few, but a capacity that resides within each of us, waiting to be activated, nurtured and cultivated. It’s a resilience born not just from bouncing back, but from the profound act of turning inward, acknowledging our pain, and finding the courage to rebuild and reimagine our lives in the face of adversity. While the journey has been absolutely brutal, it has also been transformative. My very own Dante’s Inferno. It has taught me the importance of tending to our emotional well-being with the same diligence and care that we give to our physical health. And it has reinforced my commitment to advocating for greater awareness, support, and resources for those struggling with spiritual and mental health challenges. In honoring my own journey of resilience, I hope to inspire others to recognize their own inner strength and to embrace the journey of self-discovery and healing, no matter how daunting the path may seem because in the end only you can save yourself.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Well, beyond the essential training, knowledge, and experience required to do what I do, I believe that bravery plays a pivotal role in achieving success, especially working as a spiritualist. In a profession often misunderstood and ridiculed, it takes a significant amount of courage to stand firm in one’s beliefs and practice with confidence. The efficacy of any holistic healing modality, whether its tarot reading, reiki, sound therapy and many more modalities, isn’t really solely determined by the technique itself, but rather the belief system and confidence of the practitioner. The effectiveness of these practices is deeply intertwined with a practitioner’s conviction. Despite facing skepticism and criticism, it’s the bravery to embrace the unconventional and the confidence to become an expert in a field that sets me apart. By embodying these qualities, I’m able to deliver care and guidance to my clients with authenticity and effectiveness. It’s this combination of expertise and intention that truly makes a difference in the lives of those seeking holistic healing. Bravery isn’t just about facing external challenges, but also about having the courage to fully embrace one’s calling and serve others with dedication and devotion. It’s this bravery that allows me to break through barriers and provide meaningful support to those in need, transcending mere training to create genuine impact. And honestly, if being bravely myself in this entire experience of having a Sky Visions, being a small business owner and playing in the world of entrepreneurship is my only take away, then I’ll take it.
