We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carmen Jover a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Carmen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
It wasn’t the first time I wrote a story. When I was studying Law at the University, I wrote about three stories that I self-published and sold to acquaintances. It was a process I knew how to do and enjoyed doing, so when I realized I had a story that I didn’t want to forget, I started writing it. Later, I made the drawings and sent it to some publishing houses. That’s how the opportunity to publish that story came about.
Carmen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had known that doing what one loves doesn’t mean wasting time. Sometimes we have a mistaken idea of what is good for us. We think that the obligations we believe are important should come first and be the most important, and that there will be time for hobbies later, without realizing that sometimes the hobby can become your main activity, and that doesn’t mean wasting time. For a long time, I was putting off sculpture and artistic activities for when I had time, and looking back now, it was a mistake. I guess that serves me now to value and enjoy the moment when I am creating, since years ago that was a privilege only when I had done everything else, which, by the way, I was not interested in at all.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The objective behind my creativity is simply to offer my version or interpretation of beauty in the objects I create. Right now, I’m focused on creating human figures because I’m interested in human anatomy and find human figures to be harmonious. I simply create figures that I personally like, so they reflect my personality. I don’t have recurring shapes in my repertoire of creations, but I simply do what attracts me at that moment. There was a time when I felt curious to experiment with color, as I usually work in wax and then transition the figures to bronze or brass. However, some time ago, I felt the need to create something colorful, so I experimented with resin and created some colorful compositions that have nothing to do with the bodies I am currently creating. On another occasion, I made the head of a deer in resin. Many times I start something without knowing how it will end up, but in the end, everything turns out fine. It’s a fairly natural process in the sense that I don’t plan it too much, but it flows spontaneously.
