We recently connected with Alex Usasilp and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alex thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
One day, I was on Amazon ordering products, and it dawned on me how Amazon’s competitors are faring with their shipping process because Amazon seems to have it locked down. I was thinking, how can I offer the same shipping service as Amazon, to their major competitors? I started doing research, and I found a logistics company that already had contracts with every major department store. That company tends to all the packages to smaller carriers to then make the final delivery to the customers. At that time, that logistics company had very little information on how to partner with them. The thing about me is when I start to show interest, I almost become obsessed. The next thing I did was continue to research. I searched through Indeed and found a package delivery job post from a small courier company that actually contracts for the said logistics company. So, I applied, and I got the job as a regular package delivery driver. It was almost like the show Undercover Boss, except I wasn’t the boss; I was just trying to gather some information. I spent a good two months working for them, and I picked up some really great information and leads on how to get started. From there I began to start building a courier business, then sent in a business proposal to the mentioned logistics company and successfully secured a contract with them. That has since been my business model and currently offering my shipping and logistics services to other companies as well.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
About myself, I’ve always been the hustling type of person since the age of 14, constantly exploring different business ventures and ideas. I don’t adhere to a specific industry; rather, I immerse myself in whatever industry I need to learn about at the time. My first successful business was a Vape shop. I opened the second Vape shop in San Diego in 2011 and operated it for almost 8 years. From there, I briefly delved into automotive sales before transitioning into the food industry for a few years. I began by operating a food truck and later shifted to catering and organizing major events, selling food. Currently, I’m involved in the logistics and courier business.
I believe what sets me apart from others is my perpetual commitment to researching and experimenting with new business ideas. Being innovative and intuitive is crucial for identifying and launching successful ventures. While seeking advice from friends is valuable, sometimes you must rely on your instincts. Embracing a ‘No Risk, No Reward’ attitude, I’m not afraid to explore new opportunities. If one industry doesn’t yield results, I understand the importance of finding a niche, conducting thorough research, and identifying the market for it.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My co-founder and business partner is an actual long-time friend. We’ve always talked about starting some type of business together. However, I don’t recommend doing business with friends unless there’s clear-cut and raw communication at all times. Just like any relationship, your business partnership requires a lot of communication. With this close friend, we’ve always had clear-cut communication, and that was the solid foundation of our partnership. At the time of building the courier business, my partner didn’t have much knowledge of the industry, but what’s great about him is he’s able to learn fast.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There aren’t any specific books I can say that impacted me the most through this journey. The most impactful resources that significantly helped me was TikTok and Instagram. You can learn a lot from those platforms just by searching and changing your algorithms to the business ideas you like. There plenty of business gurus and advisors on there to learn from.
