Alright, LaTanya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission is to create a safe ,fun and budget friendly place in my community where families can celebrate special occasions.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is LaTanya Oliver , I have been a manicurist for over 20 years. I decided to try something different so I looked into the venue business . It seemed to be a easy to jump right in , but I was wrong . It took a little time to get the location and permits . I opened my first location in my neighborhood where I grew up . I quickly realized families could not afford the fancy parties and big decorations , especially when they loss a family member and need to plan funerals or expecting a new baby and want to have a baby shower . Everyone was on a budget , so I made my prices affordable to low income families. People should be able to celebrate without spending all of their rent money.
5 years later ! My venue has had so many events with families making memories . There is also church events and dance teams that use my venue , so its for more than just parties .
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn that finding good help is hard . The venue business is demanding . Keeping the venue up to date with repairs and cleaning after every event is what keeps the venue attractive . Finding people to work late hours was a challenge. I do a lot of the work myself but I had to rely on the help of family to get it done. The behind the scene work is what I didn’t consider when I opened my venue .
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I started my business with my own money . I put in money I made from my other business which is a Manicurist . I own a day spa in Southwest Houston . I also saved and pulled some money from my IRA .
