Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joy T. Lane. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Joy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
Ever since I could string together a sentence, I’ve been dreaming of working in TV and film. My parents still laugh about the time that I, at the young age of four, declared my intention to go to college to work in television. Yeah, I know you don’t have to say a word, apparently, I was quite the ambitious little one. Well to be honest…I still am! Ambition has been my constant companion and I embrace this trait wholeheartedly. It fuels my passion and catapults me towards my goals.
But let’s fast forward a bit. I found myself in college, majoring in elementary education of all things. I mean, don’t get me wrong, teaching’s noble and all, but my heart was always set on media and film studies. So, sophomore year, I dropped the bombshell on my folks: “Hey, I’m switching my major to Media Studies!” And you know what? They breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, my career choice aligned with my never-ending childhood chatter about working in the industry.
After college, I found myself in New York City, first hustling as a PA then grinding as a script supervisor in the TV and film industry. Now, if you’re wondering what a script supervisor does, just imagine the person responsible for making sure every little detail in a scene matches up perfectly. It’s like being a professional continuity cop, ensuring that a coffee cup doesn’t magically refill itself between takes.
Anyway, back to the story. So there I was, script supervising away, all the while nurturing this burning desire to direct. But let me tell you, breaking into directing in TV is like trying to fit a camel through the eye of a needle. It’s tough, folks.
But then, enter Martin Gero, the showrunner extraordinaire and all-around amazing human being. This guy not only knew how to run a show like a boss, had a heart of gold, and a contagious smile but also had a knack for spotting talent and nurturing it. And boy, did he see something in me!
I remember the day like it was yesterday. Major chaos of the set, with actors flubbing lines left and right and equipment malfunctions galore, Martin briefly came to set to visit and I missed my chance to ask Martin if I couldvpick his brain about directing–he’s not just a showrunner but a talented director. Talk about bad timing. The man probably wouldn’t be in NY again for another several months. But you know what they say, “What’s for you is for you.” So, I shrugged it off, made a quick bathroom break (seriously, strong bladders are a must if you work in tv), and called up my friend, Averil (accountability partner at the time), to tell him of my missed opportunity.
But lo and behold, like a scene straight out of a feel-good movie, Martin comes strolling back onto set. And what does he do? He walks straight up to me and drops the bombshell of all bombshells: “Joy, have you ever thought about directing?”
Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather. Here I was, just planning to ask for a bit of advice, and he’s offering me the chance of a lifetime. Not only did he give me the opportunity to direct an episode, but he also went to bat for me with the studio bigwigs, convincing them that I was the next big thing in TV directing. Talk about a confidence boost! (Ok, so maybe he didn’t say it exactly like that–but you get the point).
And let me tell you, that first episode I directed? It was like stepping into a dream. Sure, there were nerves, sleepless nights, more nerves, and more than a few “oh crap” moments, but seeing my vision come to life on screen made it all worth it.
From that moment on, doors started swinging wide open for me. Thanks to Martin’s kindness and belief in me, I’ve directed episodes for some of the biggest shows out there, from “Sweet Magnolias” to “Powerbook II and III” and beyond.
But Martin wasn’t the only one to extend a helping hand. Another showrunner, Sascha Penn, followed suit, further solidifying my belief in the power of kindness and paying it forward.
So here I am, living my dream and paying it forward every chance I get. Because let’s face it, the world could use a little more kindness and belief in each other, especially in an industry that can be quite challenging to navigate as this one.
And to Martin and Sascha, if you’re reading this, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You guys didn’t just open doors for me; you kicked them down and dragged me through them kicking and screaming (in the best way possible, of course).
So here’s to kindness, belief, and never giving up on your dreams. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll be the one opening doors for the next generation of dreamers. After all, what goes around comes around, right?
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
So, here’s the scoop on me: I’m Joy, a storyteller, a director, and a coach—all wrapped up in one big bundle of creative energy. How did I end up here? Well, it’s a bit of a tale, so buckle up for the ride, ya’ll!
You see, I’ve always had this insatiable hunger for storytelling. From the moment I could string words together, I was telling crazy stories and dreaming up worlds. But it wasn’t until I stepped onto a film set for the first time that I truly found my calling.
Directing became my North Star, guiding me through the highs and lows of this crazy industry. But here’s the thing: as much as I adore calling the shots behind the camera, my heart belongs to something even bigger—helping others thrive.
That’s where my coaching comes in. I’m like a cheerleader on steroids, cheering on actors and emerging talent as they navigate the choppy waters of showbiz. You see, I’m not just passionate about telling stories; I’m passionate about watching people grow, evolve, and thrive in an industry that can sometimes feel like a minefield.
Now, what makes me different? Well, I like to think it’s my over-thinking (yeah, doesn’t sound much like a superpower, but keep reading…it is). Call it an occupational hazard, but I’ve got this obsession with untangling knots and helping people find their way. Whether it’s coaching someone through a tough scene or guiding them through the maze of auditions, I’m all in, heart and soul.
But here’s the real kicker: my personal brand isn’t about the big DIRECTOR title or impressive credits. It’s about honesty, authenticity, and genuine connection. It’s about creating a safe space where people can be vulnerable, where they can let their guard down and truly be themselves.
So, if you’re looking for someone to join you on this crazy adventure called showbiz, someone who’s more friend then look no further. Together, we’ll laugh, we’ll cry, and we’ll conquer the world, one story at a time.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
You know, it’s funny how life throws these curveballs at us when we least expect it. Like that time I was a guest on this amazing podcast “New and In Between” with Mia Maddox, and we delved deep into the topic of imposter syndrome.
I was sharing my journey with the host and her listeners, opening up about my experiences as a director and how imposter syndrome reared its ugly head many times in the early days. And let me tell you, it wasn’t easy. But through those challenges, I discovered a resevoir of resilience within myself that helped me push through the doubts and uncertainties.
I shared how I overheard a crew member whispering that I was only there because I “checked two boxes.” Ouch, right? It felt like a punch to the gut, and suddenly all those doubts and insecurities came flooding in.
But you know what? At that moment, I knew it was important for me not to let someone’s negative perception of me become the lens I viewed myself through. So, that very day I decided to close the door on imposter syndrome and lock all the locks. Instead, I used it as fuel to prove them wrong. Sure, I have my moments of self-doubt, agonizing over every mistake and misstep, but I also learned to silence those inner critics and embrace my unique gifts and talents. And folks can think or say whatever they want– I’m unapologetically ME and I am exactly where I’m supposed to be–doing what I’ve been equipped to do.
And you know what’s even funnier? We had this incredible discussion on the podcast about imposter syndrome and how it’s this sneaky little voice in our heads telling us we’re not good enough. But here’s the kicker: we don’t have to listen to it!
I shared some tips for overcoming self-doubt, like thinking back to past achievements and having self compassion, and boy is this self compassin part huge. Ya’ll give yourself some grace even when you do make mistakes, we’re human and messing up is not an unique ability exclusive to you. And let me tell you, those things have been a game-changer for me. I mean, who knew that looking in the mirror and saying three positive affirmations every day could make such a difference? Ok, to some it may sound super cheesy, but it works. Try it!
But it’s not just about overcoming imposter syndrome and being resilient—it’s about embracing who you are and owning your unique strengths. I’ve learned to lean into my ability to serve others and bring out the best in my cast and crew.
I mean, life’s too short to pretend to be someone you’re not, right? True success comes from embracing who you are and showing up as your authentic self, whether it’s on set or in everyday life.
So, if you’re ever feeling like you don’t belong or struggling with self-doubt or imposter syndrome, just know that you’re not alone. We’ve all been there and still on some days I have to put negative thoughts in a headlock and give it a few jabs. It’s all a process—a journey of growth, resilience, and self-discovery. But remember, you are uniquely and beautifully you, and the world needs your gifts and talents. So embrace who you are, own your strengths, and remember that you’re capable of more than you think.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
You know, when people ask me about my creative journey, it’s hard to sum it up in just a few words. But if I had to pick one driving force behind everything I do, it would have to be the desire to be a blessing to as many people as I can.
Whether it’s through directing or coaching, I feel like helping others thrive fuels my creativity. It’s in these moments that creativity shines at its best. I’m not just here for myself—I’m here to lend a hand to anyone who needs it, to help them navigate the twists and turns of this industry and come out on top.
It’s not just about me—it’s about creating a community where we all support each other, lift each other up, and celebrate each other’s successes. Because when one of us wins, we all win.
And that’s really what drives me every day: knowing that I have the power to make a difference in someone’s life, to help them see their own potential and reach for their dreams. Whether it’s by directing a film, coaching emerging actors, or simply sharing my story, I strive to spark and cultivate creativity as well as be a source of inspiration and encouragement for others.
