We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chorizo Rose a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chorizo , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My journey creating began when I was 4 years old and I’ve been making art professionally in a multitude of avenues for 5 years now. The combination of 20 years of personal studies and countless projects both privately and professionally in the construction and cinematic industries, gave me a foundation to begin tattooing. Learning to tattoo simply takes practice. Hours of videos, practice line work, books and listening to artists that came before me is the process I took to learn how to tattoo. It wasn’t glamorous. My process to learn tattooing was long and difficult but I believe in the new generation of tattooers. As the tattooing industry comes into mainstream culture, my hope is that the industry adapts to the needs of the modern customer and artist. Not that learning tattooing would be easy, but that it would be a respectful exchange focused on artistry and care.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Chorizo Rose and I create art in many different ways. Between tattooing and painting, drawing and sculpting, building and digital work, I’ve learned to contribute to multiple industries while allowing each art medium to assist each other. A painting of a target bag taught me how wrinkles and folds would look on fabric in a tattoo. Building movie sets taught me how a sculpture can be a life size ceramic baby or an entire room actors would fill. When you are getting a tattoo, a painting, or a sculpture from me you are receiving the combination of years of work and passion. Learning history and cultures thru international travel, thousands of late night studies, blood, sweat and tears are behind each piece that I create. Which is why I never duplicate, copy or steal designs. When you are getting tattooed or artwork from me it is original work meant to capture the purity of expression. My clients wishes are always held as an importance. I believe artwork, when made for someone, should capture their essence. I always make an effort to learn my client to create tattoos and art that they are proud to own and wear. That should always be expected in my work. Originality and collaboration. My priority, especially with tattoos, is to create with my clients to create unique and original pieces of art. I believe that’s one of the pleasures of being human. To express oneself in a way that reflects individuality and the hopes, dreams and fears that belong to that person that cannot always be put into words. I am here to be a ferry man (woman) from the mental to the physical. So let’s create together!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a tattooer and an artist is to be able to connect with my clients and see the results of our work. With each piece, my goal is to always create a safe space, a sanctuary, for that person to be seen, understood, and cared for while they are in my chair. My priorities are a collaboration between artist and client in a way that their safety, their expression and my artwork can freely exist. Their are few experiences better than walking thru the journey of a drawing and executing a tattoo for that client that will forever live with that art completing their experience as a human if only in a small way. When the pain is complete, the machine put down, and both of us look at the artwork we made together, that is the joy of knowing our mutual trust and respect created a beautiful picture they get to wear. They now get to communicate without words. They get to hold the silly and serious with them in a way that no one can steal. Even with dress codes and sigmas surrounding tattoos, I get to watch my client own their own body and who they are in a picture. It’s beautiful and a privilege to be able to create for myself and that person.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I hope that people learn from my words that there is purity within creating. There is purity within tattooing and painting and sculpture. That purity in expression and client/artist collaboration exists in the modern day and not just renaissance or historical artwork. True artists exist and I hope that my actions and artwork reflect the passion that goes into each one of my pieces. Our artwork isn’t an instant product to be utilized by industry. It is a birth of ideas and feeling. A relationship between mind and body. If people find good artists to trust, this creation can take place. Trust the process, trust your artist. If people find true artists that creation can take place and artwork unlike any other can be born. Mutual respect is essential but when that and trust are present, we can create anything. So do your research, listen to your artist, be open to the unexpected for in it you may find something beautiful.
