We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Laney a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
I have been in the coaching industry for almost a decade. The first 8 years as a health and wellness coach, where I put a lot of focus on mindset around your health. After I got pregnant, I was feeling extremely burnt out. I wasn’t looking forward to getting back to coaching after maternity leave and started letting my clients go, really stopped showing up in my business. I wanted to pivot to something else, but had no clue what that was. (this became a huge part of how I help clients now!) Finally I realized that I had so many other ways I could help people, because throughout those 8 years coaching, my 9-5 was always in corporate leadership roles. I decided to put that business and leadership experience with the mindset piece of health coaching I always loved, and fully transitioned into a mindset coach, specializing in helping female business owners overcome the mindset blocks stopping them from growing their business. This was a really hard transition for me, because the story in my mind was that I wasn’t qualified since a lot of my experience was in brick and mortar roles. I had to do a lot of mindset work so I could start running my business as the empowered boss I know I am. And this became one of the biggest areas I help clients with today.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Starting as a mindset coach for business owners, I soon realized I was also a strategist. I started as a Mindset Coach, but soon realized I am also a strategist with my clients. I help them identify and reframe the thoughts and stories that hold them where they are in their business. I work through these limiting beliefs with them, so they’re able to start showing up in their business as the CEO, not the assistant. Then, we strategize how to take needle moving action towards growth and what success looks like for them. I am most proud of the unique approach I use with my clients. I don’t attract clients under the illusion that we are going to completely rewire their brain and eliminate any self doubt. In actuality, that is almost impossible. So, I help them reframe these thoughts to serve their end goals. I help them implement changes that will result in growth inside them as leaders as well as in their bank account.
I grew up always following my own unbeaten path. I struggled a lot with comparison and self doubt. And that held me back in many ways. But as soon as I started trusting my own journey and believing in myself, I started making decisions differently. I started moving through my business as the CEO I used to watch and try to emulate. I realized I was her and I started acting like it. This is the power of self trust, one of the biggest pillars I teach in my coaching.
Once I shifted my mindset around all of this, the one thing I had been working on for so long- the ability to quit my 9-5 and coach full time, became a reality. My business grew hugely within 6 months, when I finally leaned all the way in to my unique voice, and not being afraid to get uncomfortable. This holds entrepreneurs back so much at every level of business, so I help clients overcome this and take action, not just talk about it. Many people see mindset as a time convenient area to work on, when truly, it could change everything if you allow it to create the right actions for you.

How did you build your audience on social media?
When I pivoted from health coaching to mindset coaching, my social media following had been stuck for almost a year. It barely moved. The reason it has more than doubled now is because of the specificity in my content. The reason you might get views or engagement on content, but not many follows, is because the person isn’t seeing the value they will get through your page. You need to be crystal clear what they will get from following you, what will they learn and see? If you are too general, when people land on your page, they won’t feel a connection or think that it is for them.
The number one reason I was able to grow, is because I got clear on what I offered, and was extremely confident in the value it held.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Comparison is so real. And when you see other business owners succeeding so much faster than it’s taken you, it can paralyze you. Being able to go full time with my business took me a lot longer than I ever thought it would. But it happened, and my business is continuing to grow. This is because of my solid self trust. This is because no matter what the numbers were, I didn’t waver. My income didn’t determine my moves. Entrepreneurship is so much harder than anyone realizes, but if it is where you know you’re meant to be, you just keep going.
