We were lucky to catch up with Dylan Andresen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dylan, appreciate you joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Tattooing to pay the bills and having a good time while doing it!!!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Dylan Andresen I go by “YeehawTattoos”and I work at Old Glory Tattoo Company in Asbury Park, New Jersey. I initially started as the counter guy about ten years ago, moved on to doing piercings and now I have been tattooing full time for 4 years. I had a pretty traditional apprenticeship which included not only drawing until my eyes and hands bled but also building machines, making needles and ect. Tattooing is not just a job for me it is a way of life, something that helps me wake up in the morning and look forward to doing tomorrow I will always respect tattooing and what it has done for my life. I have had the pleasure to travel make friends better my craft and even find the love of my life. I am truly grateful for tattooing. Instagram helps me put my work out in to the world so check me out @_yeehawtattoos
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal is to stay humble and to make sure I treat my clients to right and fair. I was also told by my mentor that this is a job we need to have a passion for and we are never going to be rockstars. I am not looking to become a millionaire, I just want to give people great tattoos and have a great time doing so.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding experiences I’ve had are by making customers that just walk in off the street not only return clients but making them close friends. I consider my clients homies and I thank and appreciate them for letting me do the tattoos but for all the great laughs and conversations along the way.
