We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sara Gonzalez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sara, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My artistic journey began with abstract landscapes on paper, brought to life through the fluidity of watercolors. Gradually, my canvas expanded, , as I transitioned to crafting abstract seascapes on larger canvases. Through a process rich in experimentation, and mostly guided by intuition, I focused on motifs that resonated deeply with me.
The ocean, a constant presence in my upbringing, naturally steered my palette towards the tranquil blues of the sea, the boundless skies, and the captivating hues of sunsets. As I delved deeper into these elements that I cherished, my practice underwent a remarkable transformation. On the technical front, I dedicated myself to extensive research and study, which further refined my approach to art.
As a mother of two young children, time became precious. The prospect of creating large-scale paintings was initially intimidating, yet these expansive canvases unexpectedly granted me a sense of freedom in my artistic practice. Interestingly, I now find myself grappling with the intricacies of smaller works, which present their own unique set of challenges. One thing that has really helped me is planning out my paintings beforehand.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Creativity has been the compass of my life, guiding me through an ever-evolving landscape of expression. From the vibrant hues of Venezuela to the diverse palette of Toronto, painting has been my constant companion. In my art, I strive to capture the essence of the ephemeral, those fleeting moments that, like brushstrokes on a canvas, are here one moment and gone the next.
Motherhood has been a transformative experience, not just in life but in my art as well. The arrival of my children sparked my creativity, urging me to think bigger and bolder. It was with their inspiration that I made the leap into creating art on a larger scale, each piece a reflection of the expansive love and new perspectives they brought into my world.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I have found that the act of creation is a profound journey of self-discovery and expression. I am reminded that being an artist is not just about producing art—it is about living artfully, with intention and mindfulness, being present. The process of creating something out of nothing is is meditative, a rhythmic immersion that transcends the noise of everyday life. In this space, time stands still.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had hired a consultant sooner, I’ve seen huge leaps in my practice by having someone to talk about my art! I highly recommend Dazed & Confucius
