We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Wesley Wright. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Wesley below.
Wesley, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I operate with one goal in mind in two different ways. My overall goal in life is that of purpose, not only achieving mine but helping people find theirs.
Since 2012, I have found a purpose in writing and performing music through hip-hop. Hip-hop found me during one of my darkest times in life and allowed me to create a connection that helped save my life. Through stories of failure, trauma, excitement, competition, and faith, I look to make the same impact on others that my favorite hip-hop made on me with their stories. I call it hip-hop entertainment because while it is based in hip-hop, it can venture into pop, classic rap, poetry, or even rock depending on the occasion. This path eventually led me to see the same creative passion in my surrounding peers and help found the next space I operate in…
Since 2017, I have been helping 17-24 year olds find their purpose as the Executive Director of the Regenerate Society, Inc., a non-profit organization that empowers young people to use their gifts and engage their communities in a team setting. I graduated with a degree in Biology from the University of Alabama-Birmingham, and have never used it a day in my life. Because someone allowed me the opportunity to test myself with a microphone, I found out that a life of biology was not meant for me. This is the same revelation that we look to provide other young people for their giftings. Our non-profit allows us a chance to provide them spaces to test and learn more about their field of interest and provide them platforms to gain new experiences.
Both of these paths allow me a chance to do what I was called to do, and walk through my passion in purpose.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
On the performance/creative end, I operate in a few different ways. I perform under the stage name “Wescam,” as a musician and host as well. Something that I have always had is the gift of shamelessness. This helps me because as a host, I am always open to fun ways to bring smiles out of people. I find myself actually much more comfortable on stage than I do off the stage. With other ventures, I am also a Creative Director. So for projects such as dance, music videos, and other outreach opportunities, I help provide creative perspective and advice to the artist or partner.
With the Regenerate Society, vision is my prime resource. The Regenerate Society, Inc, is a program that in some ways I am learning more about every day. Sourcing from a deep love of professional wrestling, the Regenerate Society, Inc. was created from the impact that seeing the top personalities in different divisions come together to save their futures as a company (ultimately putting their rival company out of business). Joining forces, the mindset of not reinventing the wheel allows us to never compete with other organizations. We only focus on being everything we can be to impact who we are called to. With that in mind, our program tackles social issues and coordinates initiatives in five different divisions: Activism, Business, Creative Arts, Health & Wellness, and Outreach. Our members come in each season, learn development skills that will help them across all fields of life, and help us execute these external facing initiatives in a specific division of their interest.
How’d you meet your business partner?
When I first moved to Birmingham in 2014, I kept my eye out for individuals working tremendously to make an impact in their field of choice. Through that process I found photographers, tech engineers, fashion designers, poets, fitness & media experts, etc. all trying to carve their own lanes in their fields of choice. After asking what they desired to do in life and what their given purpose was, I called each one to come together in an effort to support each other as one creative unit. Based on how the stable, D-Generation X, came together and changed pro-wrestling (as well as cable television) in the late 90’s, I looked for us to come together and do the same for the following generation of creatives. After introducing the idea of the Regenerate Society, Inc., to them all, we felt that God called us for something bigger than just being a creative group. From that first meeting, we decided to become a non-profit organization and in that first season we had three other game-changers come aboard looking to make that same type change. After the inaugural 2017-2018 season, our seven founding members: Nehemiah Horace, Sheleka Laseter, Abigail Little, Oscar Montgomery, Jr., April Moton, Briauna Perryman, & I, (Wesley Wright) became the recognized founding members.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Because we service the general Birmingham community, that means we have the ability to reach whoever necessary based on each’s initiatives objective. We always pride ourselves on the saying that “We Don’t Sleep, We Serve!” and that comes into play with our growing clientele because we consistently find way to stay active and serve. Whether it be providing helpful hands to our partnering organizations such as The Modern Green Book, The Flourish Alabama, or even the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation of the State of Alabama, we always work to stay in people’s face by serving to our best ability. Service is one of three major pillars and just by doing what we are assigned to do in life, we have been able to meet so many different partners, collaborators, other servants, and members of the community looking for what we do.
Regenerate Society has been one the largest platforms for me to connect on the entertainment side as well. By serving in the community as often as we do, I naturally create new contacts and new audiences that get a change to learn more about what I do on the microphone. Also, just being to go out and participate in open mics or smaller events around the city has been huge for me connecting with other audiences. As they say, “Stay ready, and you won’t have to get ready!”
