We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Samara Jimenez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Samara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
The training it took for me to become a hairstylist included me going to cosmetology where I had a ton of hands-on training and the opportunity to study all things cosmetology in depth. While I was there I learned not only what it took to become a great hairstylist, but a variety of other topics. I was able to learn a ton of things from electricity to anatomy to diseases and what felt like 1 million other things. As intimidating as it all was, I still have a continuing passion to learn more every day, while there was nothing I could’ve done to graduate faster there were some things I wish I did in school. I wish I would’ve been more open to trying the things that scared me and asked all of the questions I possibly could have.
I have learned through my journey that some of the best skills for anyone to have are communication and people skills. Being able to maintain professionalism, while staying creative is another challenge yet it is an important skill in this industry. Throughout the learning process, I’ve faced many obstacles, the biggest being myself. My fear of trying, and failing, kept me from learning more in school and thankfully now I have allowed myself to keep trying the scary stuff and to make mistakes. (On a mannequin, of course!) I take every opportunity I can to learn more!

Samara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a licensed nail tech and hairstylist. I got into this industry at 17 years old with the encouragement of my mom, who is also a hairstylist. I’ve always been drawn to cosmetology, hair, nails and makeup have always been a point of interest for me. I offer all different kinds of hair services, from vivid colors to updos and with nails I focus mainly on Gel-x and manicures. I love teaching clients about their hair and nails, how to maintain them and the whys of what I’m doing. I’m so proud of the work I’ve been able to do with others and the people I’ve been able to meet while in the industry have been truly incredible.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I feel that the most rewarding part of being an artist is the end result. Seeing my clients’ satisfied reactions and knowing how much hard work and practice went into their nails or hair is the most satisfying feeling in the world.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In my opinion, the best thing people can do to support artists and creatives is to support their local small businesses. In my experience small businesses do their best to create a relaxing environment, a personalized experience and to give their customers the best they can. I understand that some small businesses may be expensive but, as a small business owner myself I also know that most of the money made goes back into the business before it goes to us.
