We were lucky to catch up with Jade Daniels recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jade, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
I believe the biggest challenge to profitability in my industry is visibility. In order for someone to trust you with their online presence, you “have to” have an amazing one yourself. I, of course, know and believe that I do great work and have a passion for this field, but it can be very hard to get that out there. I find myself struggling to compete with all of the other social media managers out there, their video quality, their seemingly quick growth, their steady clientele, etc. This results in my content getting drowned out and the content creation/promotion process becoming very discouraging. It is very possible to bring in a good income in this industry, but finding your lane and cementing yourself as an expert is a consistent journey.
Jade, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am the Founder and Owner of Clara Communications, a digital marketing agency that specializes in social media management, copywriting, and content creation for small businesses and brands. My company is named after my late Grandmother who was the backbone of our family and created the family that I strive to make proud in everything I do. Through CC, I work with businesses and brands to help them build their digital footprint and engage their target audience. I work hard to strategize and create content that highlights their missions, celebrates their products/services, and builds a digital community. My services are designed to help business owners take one more thing off their full plates and give them confidence and comfort in knowing that quality content is being shared on their platforms. What sets Clara Communications apart from others is how much I relate to the clients I serve in my desire to authentically grow my business. I am also truly passionate about the work I do and I intentionally bring that to the relationships I build with my clients and the work I produce for them. When you hand your digital content over to CC, you can trust that time, thought, research, and creativity are going into everything I produce and your results will reflect that dedication.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My business has been up and running for almost 3 years now and since then I have struggled to build a following and gain visibility. In almost 3 years, I have had five clients and gained 200 followers on Instagram and while I am beyond grateful for the amazing clients I’ve had and my followers who support me, my growth has been consistently slow. When you see other social media managers share that they’re fully booked and their content gets consistently high engagement, it takes a toll on your confidence and makes you question your skills and purpose. To combat these thoughts I strive to find the beauty in my journey no matter how “slow” it seems. I keep pushing myself to continue showing up, making quality content, and promoting myself and my business. I also force myself to continue pitching my services to businesses even after countless “nos” and unanswered emails because I know that as long as I keep trying I will find the right clients. I’ve learned to continue to pivot, try new things, and not force myself into one box.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that I have to “niche down.” I have a lot of passions that include making fun coffees on TikTok, mentoring youth, and baking and there’s no reason I can’t bring all of those elements to my content. When you’re trying to grow on social media people will constantly tell you that you have to have a niche and stick to it, and while it is partly true, I also believe that we are so multi-faceted that we would do ourselves a disservice by forcing ourselves to only share one aspect forever. I had to unlearn the concept that everything you post or share about your business has to be so formal and that you’re allowed to be creative and fun so give yourself space to do so.
