Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jeremy Dickerson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jeremy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’ve love to hear an interesting investment story – what was one of the best or worst investments you’ve made? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
I’ve invested a lot of money in expensive tools. I’ve found that just because the tools are expensive doesn’t mean they are better. A lot of tools can accomplish the same things and cost a third of the costs. It’s important to do your research on tools before you invest thousands of dollars into one.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was working as an RN full time in the ICU. During that time I got hit what a divorce, and needed something that gave me the flexibility to be more present for my kids. I started building furniture as a hobby. I found that it kept my mind busy while going thru the divorce. I originally started off in my garage building tables while my kids were at school. I kept learning different tricks of the trade by watching you tube videos and other furniture makers videos on social media platforms. My first table I ever built for a client I made $250 on and I would post everything I built on Instagram and Facebook for advertising. Slowly more and more individuals reached out to have me build various furniture. Then covid hit, homeowners were doing my upgrades to their houses, and because of the bigger manufacturers shutting down productions for a period of time, people started turning to furniture makers like myself who could offer custom pieces in half the production time that big box store furniture manufactures were offering.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I’ve always enjoyed seeing the end result. To me, nothing is more satisfying that creating something beautiful and functional from raw wood. I try to creat pieces that not only challenge myself, but leaves the client wondering how I built it.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My social media presence has been very organic. It seems that serious buys come from Facebook more so than any other platform. I try to post a reel or story atleast one time per day to keep people engaged. I’ll also go back to hold projects and repost on my Instagram and Facebook stories. I’ve found that many times new audience members do not take the time to look back at old stuff I’ve made, and it refreshes their memory. Many times they will message me with “ I didn’t realize you do cabinets, etc”. It’s a great advertising tool.
