Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ashley Berges. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ashley , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
Clients work with me to receive my guidance and support with regards to their current challenging living situation, childhood upbringing and its impact, and a sincere want and desire for positive profound life change. In the beginning of our work together, we are more laser focused on the other person in their life, their significant other or spouse. We work so they can better understand why the other person behaves and acts as they do. We dissect motivations and misunderstandings. We investigate the core reasons for outbursts, anger, silent treatment, passive aggressive behavior, and more. As we work through this layer of our work, they acquire more understanding of the other person in their life as well as gaining more personal understanding. We choose every relationship in our life, some of these are healthy choices and others not. However, every relationship we have with others helps us to better understanding ourselves.
We must understand the people we live with to better understand ourselves. In this process we begin to work to uncover why we have chosen the specific path we have taken. We examine the past relationship choices we have made prior to this relationship. These relationships help us to better understand our choices. Remember our relationship choices are symptoms of how we were raised. As we examine those relationships we better see the role we played in each one. We also deep dive into the relationship the client had with their parents growing up. We must examine our childhood relationships with our parents instead of our current relationship with our parents. As adults we are able to make concessions and acceptances because we have more knowledge and lifetime understanding. However, when we were children we didn’t understand why our parents did specific things or acted specific ways towards us. Some of these occurrences with our parents caused mental and emotional harm that impacted us deeply. Our personal development was affected by our upbringing and family life. Most of us need to examine that upbringing to better understand our feelings towards ourselves, our life choices, and our outlook on life. In this examination, we are able to derive much understanding as to why we have chosen our specific direction in life. As we examine these relationships, we are able to better understand what we experienced, and we are then able to work to heal childhood wounds. Many of us may be consciously unaware of our childhood wounds. Once we are able to unpack and address their existence, we are then able to begin to heal and move on. Throughout the process of healing past wounds, we are able to strengthen our identity and better our current relationship with our family. As we better understand ourselves by experiencing the healing process, we are then able to better understand why we have made unhealthy choices in our past and make better choices from here on out.
Now it is time to begin to move into some of my favorite work I do with my clients.
This part of our work together addresses what I have labeled as: The Negative Broken Record retrieval and removal phase. The negative broken record is a collection of black and white thoughts that run together in the mind. These thoughts are like lyrics in our mind that string together negative personal thoughts. Most of us are not aware we even have a negative broken record much less the actual thoughts that are strung together. For most of us the record is unheard, unfortunately instead of hearing it, acknowledging it, and working to eliminate it, we instead act on these thoughts. Because these thoughts are fear based and negative in nature we make unhealthy choices in our lives.
For example: If the fear of dying alone and never having anyone to love is part of our broken record, we will choose poorly when it comes to relationships. In fear of not having anyone, we will choose anyone. When we have thoughts about being unworthy or unsuccessful, we may sabotage our success by making unhealthy choices. When we begin to work on the negative broken record we begin to discover first that it exists and second what it says. I have many specially designed exercises to help us find and identify these thoughts. Once we find these thoughts, we are then able to work through them, first realizing their black and white origin, then working to realize the lack of logic each possesses, and then examining each statement to realize their untruth. As we work to examine the record and work to let these thoughts go after a deep evaluation and discovery of their untruths, we then begin to eliminate the record in its entirety. Once the process is complete, clients are then able to enter any situation without preconceived notions, assumptions, fear, and without engaging in autopilot self-sabotage. This takes daily practice however, the value it brings to one’s life is immense and powerful. What people tell us about ourselves is one thing however what we tell ourselves about ourselves affects us a hundred fold. Once we begin to let go of these outdated negative personal thoughts, we can then work to create a solid blueprint of ourselves. I help clients to develop a complete blueprint of themselves.
The development of a personal blueprint is then established after the elimination of the negative broken record. At this point, we are no longer clouded with negative self-judgment we are then able to move into a new chapter of our lives. Then we can begin to honestly understand what we value in life, what we want in our life, and what we will not accept in our life. Understanding our personal values is extremely important because it helps us to realize when we are living true to our values and when we are not. In order to create a true personal blueprint, we can not just regurgitate our parent’s values, they must be our own. In our journey to identify our true personal values, we must look back to past relationships and experiences and recognize the disfunction. Disfunction and unhealthy relationships go a long way for us to understand what we won’t accept in our lives. This gives us information into what we actually want in our life. It is often best to look at the past unhealthy relationships to better identify the values that truly matter in one’s life. I have established a process for value development, assimilation, and daily practice. Throughout these processes and more, I am working to help my client understand themselves. Our biggest purpose for being on this planet is to truly understand ourselves. This life is to fully understand you. And every relationship we have in our life healthy or unhealthy helps us to greater paint that personal picture. I work with the whole client not just symptoms of one’s life. Clients work with me because they want to truly know themselves and through our work they begin to realize their true purpose and power. The only true purpose we have is to truly know ourselves.
