Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alisha Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alisha , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The mission of Alisha D. Brown Career Consulting, LLC is to shape the future of women veterans so they emerge as confident and impactful leaders, ready to conquer challenges and achieve their career and lifestyle aspirations.
Not only is this my company’s mission statement, but it happens to a very personal mission statement as I utilized this mentality as a foundation to create a successful career and lifestyle after separating from the military in March 2010. Being told by a male counterpart that I would be nothing without the military, that I would have no success without the military, caused me a tremendous amount of transitional grief and I was determined to find a way to the positive side. Once I created a path and gained the ability to live successfully without the military, I made it my mission to motivate and influence other women veterans who may have encountered similar situations amidst their transition. I stand to be an example of what it looks like to not allow anyone dictate your success. I am intentional and obsessed with helping women veterans, and women, live as impactful and confident leaders in their respective career fields.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In the military, I performed military HR work and so when I separated, I attended Saint Leo University and obtained my bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management with a minor in Psychology. During my studies, I worked as a HR Specialist in the Federal government, specializing in labor and employee relations – requiring me to assist with conflict management. It was after this that I knew that I wanted to mediate, solve conflict and help bring solutions to complicated situations. Although I started my business developing marketable resumes for veterans interested in federal employment, I made the decision to discontinue resume development and focus 100% on consulting. The best decision ever!!
I cater to women veterans by offering them resume reviews and analysis, educating them on using the STAR Method to articulate their worth, career assessments and LinkedIn profile creations. I also focus on leadership development where I have dubbed myself as an Authentic Speaker for Women Veterans because I have a message and lessons learned that will help them get to the next level in their career. I am most proud of the fact that I have actually had the opportunity to add Speaker to my business portfolio to spread my message on being successful leaders! I am looking to add more opportunities in the near future.
The main thing I want people to know about me is that I am very optimistic during difficult workplace and career related situations and that no matter what happens or how long it takes, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I am proud of the audience I have built on LinkedIn. I have presence on Facebook, but the type of client I want to work with now, exists on LinkedIn because they are truly focused on getting to the next level. With that I have to say that I only talk about things I have experience with – labor relations, employee relations, military transition, women veteran topics, career development and leadership development. I re-share articles and situations related to these topics and provide my professional insight and tips. I am also intentional about the connections I make on LinkedIn and I make it my business to send a thank you when I connect with someone. That is how I have built my audience on LinkedIn – creating relationships to expand my network!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The mere fact that I transitioned from the military as a married black woman with children and life didn’t skip a beat for our kids is all that I need to show my resilience. I survived when others said I would not and that I would fail. I recovered quickly from the difficulty of transitioning from the military which illustrates my resilience.
