We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Thomas Kaufmann a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Thomas, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Starting a small business is always a risk. I believe in myself enough to take on this challenge head on and come out on top. I’ve spent too many years on the sidelines having the would of, should of, could of thoughts. Eventually something has got to give and here I am ready to start the next chapter.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started making Halloween displays in my front yard and making Halloween masks at home starting back in High School around 2008. In 2015 I was interning for a artist that worked a at Special effects shop which I later started for on and off for about three years. Between learning at home and at this FX shop I learned the foundations of sculpting, mold making and painting. Now with my company I have started making high quality Halloween Masks, props, and animatronics for the Halloween industry. What I’m most proud of is overcoming the challenges of running a small business and keeping the quality of my products to a high standard.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Its highly rewarding to flesh out a idea that was in your head to something that is 3 dimensional in real life.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
In the Halloween industry everyone is competing against each other to have the best mask, prop, etc. My goal is to always to compete against myself and my past work. With a small business sales is always a priority but its finding a balance with making something that you think is creatively cool and what will sell.
