We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ash León. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ash below.
Alright, Ash thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
All of my projects mean something to me. They’re all sentimental in their own way, but I would say that my most recent project, “Follow Me” is holds the most the space in my heart at this time. It’s my most avant-garde body of work in my opinion and different is what I strive for. I don’t know how to be anything or anyone other than myself and I’m a weirdo. My music has to reflect that. I don’t do this because I take myself seriously. I don’t have anything to prove. I’m having fun and I wouldn’t change that for anything.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I don’t know how to be anyone or anything other than myself and as it turns out that’s the source of my creativity and the message I hope anyone who takes the time to listen to my music will receive. Psychedelia helped me merge all of my identities and my childhood holds most of my influences whether it’s anime or cinema. If you’re a fan of the avant-garde then I invite you into the world I’m building.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Being a full-time creative requires commitment, consistency, intentionality as well as sense of urgency and passion. Unfortunately, a lot of artistic industries require financial investment. Non-creatives often envision a solution to be a part-time or even full-time job, which hypothetically takes up a third of your day. That often creates conflict between the commitment and consistency needed to advance in your artistry. My advice to non-creatives is to hold more space and patience for those who are brave enough to purse their artistry.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is simultaneously satisfying my inner child while also resonating with others. Earning money and being able to maintain stability is a priority. It feels good to be able to eat from my creations. There’s just something about those moments where someone comes up to you after a show and expresses how moved they were.
