Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Luca Canale Brucculeri. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Luca, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
As far as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to create worlds. When I was a child, at a young age, whether playing in the afternoons on my bike or simply in the backyard, I loved creating stories with few objects and a lot of imagination. But my true love for art and cinema was born in the video store: my mom had three jobs, so I spent a lot of time with my maternal grandparents. Every evening, before going home, she would take me to the video store to choose a VHS. That was my film school, the moment when I fell in love with the seventh art.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an Italian director, screenwriter, producer, and actor. I primarily work on feature films, music videos, short films, or TV series. I started working in the film industry at the age of 18, initially as an extra on sets and later in small or supporting roles in television dramas. One day, due to a miscalculation and overstaffing, I was placed on set as a runner, and from that day on, I began to take my first steps behind the scenes of film sets: helping out, moving lights and scenery, bringing lenses to the directors of photography. At that moment, I realized that my place in the world of cinema was not in front of the camera but behind it. I wanted to tell stories; I wanted to create different worlds.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
To be a creative or an artist, for me, means bringing imagination to life. It’s as if the games I played as a child never ended but instead evolved. A bit like how Sandman plays with the sand in our dreams, my goal is to use that dream sand and build fantastic structures that can allow other people like me to continue playing and feel less alone.
My latest film, H010N, is precisely about this: a film inspired by my childhood, by those VHS tapes that I loved so much, by the Japanese animation I watched in the afternoons at my grandparents’ house on private TV networks, and by my own imagination and personal experiences.
But even my first film, Onirica, is based on my past and my journey, a heartfelt homage to Italian giallo and the great Master Dario Argento. It’s all part of my cinematic culture, my taboos, what led me to create these worlds with my eye and my vision.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I have always loved reading and watching films: while other children played soccer as kids, I loved reading and writing. Among my greatest influences, I can mention David Lynch, Wong Kar-wai, Michelangelo Antonioni, and Federico Fellini for the cinematic aspect, although my heart belongs entirely to Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis with “Ghostbusters”, Robert Rodriguez with “From Dusk Till Dawn.” and Dario Argento. From a literary standpoint, in my later years, I have come to appreciate Murakami, as well as Alexandre Dumas, Stephen King, and the great gothic novels, which certainly had a strong impact on my personal growth and culture.
From an entrepreneurial perspective, I can mention “Le cinéma selon Alfred Hitchcock” by François Truffaut and “The Book of Five Rings” by Miyamoto Musashi. Only recently have I discovered an immense love for the philosophy of Arthur Koestler, which has also influenced my latest film: H010N (produced by Molteni Media Productions, Inverno Workshop, Nova Rolfilm and May Film Studios), a film inspired by my childhood, by those VHS tapes that I loved so much, by the Japanese animation I watched in the afternoons at my grandparents’ house on private TV networks, and by my own imagination and personal experiences.
