We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mariya Pallais. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mariya below.
Mariya, appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
Right now, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken over, the dialogue not the world (yet). Specifically, people in the PR and Marketing industry are speaking out with concerns that AI will replace us. My question to those people would be to ask if they have utilized AI in their work – if so, they would see that it’s not yet in that position. Instead, I would encourage them (especially small businesses) to see AI as an asset and build synergy with it. Implementing AI tools has the ability to increase efficiency, allowing smaller agencies to become more competitive.
Every technological advance society makes comes with some level of concern – AI is not different; however, the real concern is when we do not evolve to keep up with it. We then face a reality of being replaced. It is our responsibility to keep the dialogue on AI open and create an ethical and fair way to use it. Instead of rebuking it, be a part of its acquisition and development. As it becomes more refined, we will see the growing pains (like navigating the current copyright issues). First versions are rarely the ones that stick, but once the issues are identified and resolved, the final product will be well worth it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Mariya Pallais, of Mariya Pallais PR (didn’t see that one coming, I bet), a Tech and Entertainment publicist, world explorer, and avid SCUBA diver. Of all of the paths I saw my life going when I was younger, this was not one of them (because clearly I was going to be a professional barrel racer); however, adulthood came in hot, and the rent needed to be paid, so I started a job in the marketing department at airbnb. I quickly realized that not only did I have a knack for it, but I also enjoyed it. After learning a bit more and gathering my courage, I decided to open my own PR company. Things have taken a few turns, as they tend to do. From navigating COVID to refining the services we offer, being an entrepreneur necessitates a commitment to evolving. Currently, we offer services to grow and develop personal brands, with our newest service being Roast My Brand – a comprehensive brand audit. Having a strong personal brand and being known as a thought leader in one’s field is significant for business development.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I have been building out my LinkedIn for a long time and have generated nearly $600,000 in total business from it. Some will say it’s not a social media platform; however, I disagree. Regardless of how we label it, it is the world’s largest professional network. It can be the ultimate PR tool when utilized correctly. I have generated many clients from it, as well as features, podcast invites, etc. Consistency is key. You must have a strong understanding of your target audience and create content around what resonates with them. I have a decent sized following of 22k+, but more importantly they’re all my target market and niche, which is why it benefits my company. If you don’t have an active LinkedIn presence, it can seem daunting at first. My advice would be to complete small actions daily, and it will eventually snowball your personal brand. Growing your personal brand on LinkedIn will also serve your company.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Reputation management is my soapbox. There are so many tools that you can use to stay on top of your reputation. I am not sure I can promote those here, though, so just send me an email if you need help in this area.
When managing my own brand/reputation, I keep it simple:
– I am transparent with my clients.
– Never over promise
– Clear and open communication
– Maintain consistency and honesty
Adhering to these cornerstones has allowed me to cultivate excellent relationships with all of my clients, which continues to generate referrals and drive business.
