We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katy Bishop. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katy below.
Alright, Katy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
My mother found the Art Institute scholarship program for junior and senior high school students and “encouraged” me to apply. I say “encouraged” because I felt I was busy enough with all kinds activities like chorus, band, the volleyball team and my boyfriend. But I did apply, and I spent every wonderful Saturday in class at the Art Institute for two years. My mother’s actions and intentions were the kindest helping hand I’ve ever received.
Katy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a contemporary abstract painter based in Los Angeles. My gestural abstract artworks are characterized by bold, expressive, and vibrant use of color. In addition, I am known for my use of alcohol ink in reverse painting on plexiglass and glass.
I began my artistic journey as a young teen in Chicago. Feeling the profound impact of “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” while in scholarship classes at Chicago’s Art Institute, I began studying various artists like Seurat, Richter and Helen Frankenthaler who inspired me to explore my own talents with perseverance and determination.
These artists would also be the starting point when I returned to my art after raising my family and a successful film production career. Over the years, my extensive practice and experimentation helped me create art that resonates with her voice. Finally in 2020 I decided to “go public” and put my artworks into festivals and exhibitions.
My two solo exhibitions with TAG Gallery, Los Angeles, in 2023 were very successful. My artworks have been in juried group exhibitions in other commercial galleries in Los Angeles, Costa Mesa, Chicago, Rome, Venice and many websites online.
“TERRA FIRMA VII” has been awarded the Golden Award at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in 2023. My abstract, PROPEL, recently won First Place – Abstract at the Betsy Lueke Gallery in “Rock.Paper.Scissors.Art” exhibition, jurored by Elizabeth Tucker, President of Women Painters West.
I am a member of The Los Angeles Art Association, the California Art League, the International Association of Art – USA and the Women’s Caucus for Art. Her work is represented by TAG Gallery, Los Angeles and MEGA Gallery, Rome and can be found in many private collections across the country.
Working on and in my art career is rewarding and frustrating. I came back to my art later in life. But it is all of the experiences I had as in my 20 plus years as a TV commercial producer, all of the traveling, all of the people I have met and all of those I have loved — these form me and my art. I paint what I feel, not what I see.
I have so much more to paint and so much more marketing to do to take my career to its highest and best potential. And I’m having fun.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I reach out to my email list of clients and friends on a monthly basis with news about exhibitions I’m in that they can go to and on-line exhibitions. When I win an award, they also hear from me. Each of my clients also receive an email with new artwork as each piece is finished. I don’t use a Newsletter format, I write emails that are personal.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love to share my joy when painting and I appreciate the opportunity to create artworks that someone else can repeatedly enjoy. Clients tell me often of the happiness they feel when looking at my artwork on their own wall.
