We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dara Krovetz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dara below.
Hi Dara, thanks for joining us today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
Throughout the years, as my business grew, I learned that many of my clients never actually printed the images that I would create for them. I wanted to ensure that the children I photographed would have their gorgeous portraits to pass down to their children. For the past 9 years I have specialized in fine art maternity, newborn, children and family fine art photography and provide my clients with the best customer experience. My clients get pampered at their sessions with hair and makeup styling. We provide hundreds of couture pregnancy outfits and accessories, along with dresses for girls of all ages and women. We have hundreds of newborn outfits and props to design our newborn sessions, so that we can coordinate colors and themes in our clients’ homes, nurseries and the decor of their home where their portraits will hang for their families to enjoy. I help my clients select the best images for their artwork, albums and keepsake boxes along with gift products for their families to cherish for a lifetime.
Dara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started my photography journey 11 years ago when I had an online boutique where I designed photography props for photographers. I used to give a local photographer my props to photograph, and oftentimes it would take too long to receive the product images, so I started photography to photograph baby’s and children in the products I designed. I
learned photography by teaching myself, attending many photography conventions and attending workshops in person and online. I help my clients to create a legacy to pass down to their children. I am extremely proud of how hard I have worked to build my business. I am truly grateful for every client that I meet. I also photograph headshots and branding sessions for corporate clients and models. This year I have added boudoir photography and hope to
grow this aspect of my business.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I was a court reporter for 22 years. I stopped due neck and back issues and pain. In 2014 I had a cervical fusion and January of 2015 I had a lumbar fusion. Then in 2018 I had carpal and cubical tunnel surgery. I have always loved to work, so stopping was not an option. Through a lot of physical therapy and restorative yoga techniques I have managed to continue working and running my business. Photographing all of the precious newborns is therapy for me, because have to bend and squat and pose these tiny humans and it is truly a blessing to do what I love. If you love what you do, you stay resilient and succeed.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
