We recently connected with Prairie Pavement and have shared our conversation below.
Prairie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
We learned to function as a band through sharing our demos of our songs with each other and rehearsing frequently. We also have played a lot of shows, which have helped us gain experience. Playing shows has helped us refine our stage presence, as well as make and strengthen connections throughout our local music scene.
As for our learning process, we got started very quickly with playing original music and trying to play out as much as possible.
We’ve learned many important skills over the years. The second most important skill next to musical proficiency would have to be networking. Socializing with the other bands at shows has definitely helped us to form connections that have led to more shows, new friendships, and more opportunities. Of course, our previous musical backgrounds have helped us immensely in being able to communicate with each other musically, leading to better sounding performances, and eventually led to us developing our own unique sound.
Personal obligations led to lineup changes, which has been one of the biggest obstacles that we’ve faced as a band. Personal lives in general tend to get in the way at points. Being in a group with four people, it is inherently difficult to get everyone to be in agreement with each other, however we’ve learned to adapt by strengthening communication.

Prairie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are a four-piece indie rock band from Western New York, founded in 2021 by four high school students with the intention of performing at an arts festival. We decided to continue after performing for our friends and peers, and recorded/released our first album shortly after. This led to more performance opportunities, connections, and exposure. This gave us the motivation and creative drive to write more music, which would then appear on our sophomore LP the following year. Something that we feel sets us apart from other bands is our honest and diverse songwriting, our chorus-y jangly guitars, and our upbeat and energetic performances.
Our proudest achievement as a band is spreading positivity throughout our local music scene, as well as bringing people together in addition to making music that people enjoy.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a band is seeing people happy at our shows. We also love meeting people that tell us that they regularly listen to our music and that they enjoy it. Seeing that people are enjoying what we’re creating is very motivating for us and it gives us the push to keep creating as a group.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our main goal as a band is to spread as much positivity as we can through making high quality music. A part of that goal that we are currently working on is playing outside of our immediate area to aid in spreading our music to new audiences. We would really like to see how far we can go, and how we can progress in our journey.
