We recently connected with April Purdie and have shared our conversation below.
April, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I started having an eye for fashion as a teenager. Fashion is my passion, but I look at fashion in a totally different way. I would help my friends put outfits together for many occasions, school, parties, and teenage hangouts, and they always asked for my advice and they loved every idea I came up by putting their pieces together. They would say this is so natural for you April how you can put a whole outfit together in a blink of an eye. However, I would not do it for myself because I dealt with low self-esteem and a lack of confidence throughout middle and high school because of my weight. I wore jeans, big T-shirts, tennis shoes and socks with my slides because I was self-conscious about my appearance. I had many nicknames for being the skinniest girl ever, I was called olive oil from the Popeye cartoon. Skinny Minnie, toothpick, etc., this list goes on with all the skinny jokes or they’ll say you’re pretty but super skinny. Yes, they were typical teenage jokes, but later in life, as an adult, when I was trying to find myself and who I was, it affected me, and I began to feel negative about my physical appearance and believe what they said about me.
Years passed, and I wanted to change my appearance and create a signature style that complemented me and who I was. I became more confident than I’ve ever been in my entire life. I gained respect as an individual, and it showed my unique creativity through fashion. Fashion changed my life, my mood, focus, creativity, and sense of accomplishment, boosted my confidence, I stood out, and it improved my mental health because of fashion. God gave me a vision in 2019 to start a business called AGP Pearls fashion boutique by helping others look good, feel good, and dress in the latest trends by uplifting, encouraging, and building one’s confidence through fashion. Many people did not know that I suffered with low self esteem issues and that I was not confident in myself. That’s how I started my business I knew that I was supposed to help others who felt the same way as I did. Fashion change everything for mental and physically. When we look good we feel good, right? I know my purpose was to inspire and encourage others through fashion. As fashion consultants we are honest decision makers for your looks and we take pride in your appearance. I have solved hundreds of problems for my clients, boost their confidence, save them time on finding something wear, five star service, and keep them updated on what’s new. What set me apart is that I have personal relationships with my clients and I learn their style and know just what they like to make their lives easier. I’m most proud of that I did not allow my past to stop me from being just who God created me to be and I want my clients to know that AGP Pearls stands behind our values we Serve we don’t sell.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation was being consistent in my business. Always creating good content. Social media helped me so much. You can’t post one day about your business and then post again a month later. You have to be consistent in letting people know who you are and what you have to offer. You have to solve their problems in whatever business you have.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for for growing my clientele has been my Annual fashion shows.
