We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bushra Awwad. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bushra below.
Bushra, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was first introduced to macarons during our visit to Paris, we stumbled upon Laduree. I had always had the interest in baking macarons, but only started baking macarons since 2021, during the COVID Pandemic. We decided to move forward and bake for friends and family and it started expanding from there. I came up with the name Beskoté in an ode to my Palestinian roots. The word Beskoté means delicate biscuits in Arabic. Our logo is of an almond branch, as the base of macarons are made from almond flour. Our growth of the business has been through natural word of mouth and we’ve been able to serve our community since.
Bushra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
There is a lot of discipline in the art of baking and the techniques of perfecting the macaron, including ensuring your have the right equipment, following the correct measurements for your mixes, baking times relevant to them. Figuring out the proper needs of the equipment I had, especially the oven was a learning process overtime. The creative portion of it relies in the different fillings and flavors of macarons. I take great pride in my work, dedicating my utmost effort to ensuring that my products are of the highest quality.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
We began with just one mixer and the essential ingredients, gradually investing in additional equipment with the earnings we generated. It was not a quick journey, but it was one that we truly were able to appreciate.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Being a Palestinian born to Palestinian parents and witnessing my people go through struggles and strive for freedom has ingrained in us a deep sense of resilience. Everything else is a drop in the bucket. We do not give up easily. If we face setbacks, we adapt our techniques and continue to evolve.
