Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sydney Gates. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sydney, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned the art of screenwriting and storytelling by indulging in the work of the writers that influenced me. I would find myself binging the works of Quentin Tarantino, Tyler Perry, and Mara Brock Akil just to name a few. I eventually went to college to fully dive into screenwriting and hone into my craft. Knowing what I know now, I would have started taking it more serious a long time ago. Writing was initially a hobby for me that turned into my passion. I found storytelling to be the most essential skill I could have ever learned.
Sydney, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a screenwriter. I started in my industry as an extra in movies back in 2021. I didn’t have any lines, but I made it my mission to network and let people get to know my name and my face. Each day I grow more and more as a writer. This allows me to write full time as a career. I have sold multiple films and short films that will premiere later this year. I’m also blessed to have the opportunity to continue to be apart of my projects even though someone else is producing them. I want people to know that this didn’t happen for me overnight. I have faced rejection more times than I can count. Eventually somebody gave me a yes and it’s been a yes ever since. People have tried to deter me and steer me in another direction, but I stepped out on faith and did what I was called to do.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
After I was deeper into the film industry, I wanted to dibble and dabble in multiple lanes within the industry. During my job search, I located tons of Hollywood job websites that would have helped me enter my field quicker. Websites like hollylist, backstage, and staffmeup are the Snagajob of the film and entertainment industry.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
As I dive deeper into the entertainment industry, I have to learn that everybody is not out to get you, BUT there are people that mean you no good. As a female in the game, there are those in power that will try to get you to do “favors” in order to have a seat at their table. I see it all the time. Dealing with these kinds of people have taught me to remain aware and focused on my goal.
