We were lucky to catch up with Kourtney Cannon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kourtney, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I wish I started my art career sooner rather than later, but I also wish I knew that I had the passion to paint. Unexpectedly painting came out of my new journey and motherhood. I had always been driven to explore new careers, but I had worked as a wedding planner for quite some time with a background and degree in business management. I had been in accounting insurance, gotten my real estate license, worked at a coffee shop, then a waitress numerous different times, a dog walker, worked at a pet store, and even tried my hands at a holistic acupuncture medical office. I knew that once I had kids I wanted them to be my priority and by the time my second daughter came around I did not expect the health journey we would be on with her. I went from working full-time to playing with kids full-time and sitting a lot and being in the hospital with downtime. To pass the time my first daughter and I painted a lot, played a lot, and created a lot. It was therapeutic to the both of us and soon a friend encouraged me to start an Instagram and pop some art up. It all began there, and I wish it had started sooner, but there’s a perfect time for everything.
Kourtney, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Kourtney Cannon, I have a husband, Ryan, and we live a very laid back life in Jupiter Fl. with our three girls, three dogs, and four cats. I started painting as a mom with my kiddos making art out of daily creative play. I am known for live event painting and commission art, but also willing to paint anything requested. What sets me apart from others is that painting is a passion for me not a job and I truly love everything I get to create. What brings me the most fulfillment is that I have built a business that allows me to spend everyday getting to be creative with my girls.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Creatives are our own worst enemies and a lot of it can be mental, which means you can talk yourself out of being creative. People want to know where you’ve studied art, your professional background and techniques. I am proud of myself for being fully transparent in my background and overcoming my own criticism and other’s doubts. I think the fact that I continue to create is a testament of resilience.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to show my kids that God has perfect timing and a way better plan than I could have ever dreamed of for my life. I am glad stepped out of my own way to allow the Lord’s greater plan to take place, and that He has me where I am supposed to be each and everyday.
