We recently connected with Jesse Espinoza and have shared our conversation below.
Jesse, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I have not been able to earn a full-time living from my creative work, yet. The biggest step for me was stepping out of my comfort zone and collaborating with other artists and musicians. Because of this, I have been able to meet so many wonderful people and get many opportunities to play shows. I look into the past a lot and see how I could have sped up the process. But I like to think that I’m where I need to be. And things happen the way they do for a reason. I plan on embracing this journey toward my dream as a musician because it will turn me into what I need to be.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Jesse Espinoza. A Guitarist, Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, & beat maker. I make a wide variety of music but, my sound is often compared to Lofi/Neosoul. I take inspiration from all types of music, even if it’s music that doesn’t necessarily interest me. Being open-minded allows me to offer a more versatile sound for the artists I collaborate with and for my own music.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to work with as many artists as possible and, help them achieve their sound. When I learn other artists’ music, I approach it as if I am a chameleon or a Cuddlefish. Both of those animals can change their color and shape to blend with their environment. However, they are very unique to themselves. I also want to release different types of music. Whether it be Jazz, Hip-Hop, Lofi, Rock, Rnb, etc. Whether my music gains popularity or not doesn’t bug me. I truly enjoy making music and I want to make my fans happy and inspired by my creations.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are a plethora of resources I wish I had some clue about when I was younger. But, even if I had those resources then, I probably wouldn’t know how to utilize them. Things come to you when you’re ready & open enough to receive it. A resource that I feel often goes overlooked is the most simple one. Believing yourself. It doesn’t matter how much music theory you know, how good of a player you are, or how many connections you have. If you don’t believe in yourself all of your work will be in vain.
