Imagine you’re a doctor, ready to help patients, and the star of the show – your MRI machine – suddenly decides to take an unannounced vacation. That’s the kind of nightmare scenario no one in the medical imaging field wants to experience. But that’s also where companies like Digit Systems, step in as the unlikely superheroes. We’re not selling shiny, brand-new equipment like those big-name manufacturers – we help smaller clinics get the same incredible diagnostics at a price that won’t make their accountants faint.
A few years ago, a super-enthusiastic doctor with zero imaging experience walked through our doors. His dream? To open his own imaging center. Thankfully, he’d landed at the right place. Within months, we set him up with a top-quality pre-owned MRI system and got things running smoothly for him. So far, so good, right? But machines, bless their complicated little circuits, have minds of their own. Sure enough, things eventually took a turn for the dramatic. But that’s where our story really gets interesting…
Unlike a lot of companies in this space, having a giant warehouse full of spare parts is our superpower. We also have lightning-fast engineers who can diagnose and fix a cranky MRI quicker than you can say “electromagnetic resonance”. That doctor? Downtime was never a major issue for him. 4 hours – that’s the average fix time when anything went wrong. But my best “save the day” moment involved a faulty coldhead, a mysteriously low helium level, and a very panicked MRI owner. Let’s just say it was an evening that involved a blanket and a pillow next to the MRI and a whole lot of dedication. That incident spurred us on – we’re launching a brand-new remote monitoring system this quarter to make sure no MRI ever has a surprise meltdown again!

Daekwan(James), before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Daekwan Lee, but in my industry, most folks call me James. My journey into the world of medical imaging wasn’t a straight line. After studying business, I dove into international freight forwarding. Moving everything from massive steel pipes to delicate missile components was thrilling, but something about medical equipment captured my imagination – perhaps a lingering influence from my father’s work in medical device manufacturing. I found my niche in diagnostic imaging, managing over 70 complex MRI and CT installations. The challenges were immense: intricate logistics, strict regulations, and the pressure to ensure everything met our clients’ needs. It was during this time, while working toward our ISO 13485 certification, that things took an unexpected turn.
Today, I’m the CEO of Digit Systems. With over a dozen years dedicated to this field, the title fits, but I still wear many hats. At the heart of our company is a simple philosophy: the right people in the right roles create momentum, and a leader’s true job is to serve the team. We’re a tight-knit group, and whether I’m closing a sale, building our online presence, keeping the books balanced, or out in the field with a screwdriver in hand, that philosophy guides me.
Beyond my work, I’m a father and a husband. My ultimate goal in life, the dream I’ve carried since I was fifteen, is to be a good father. This year, with the birth of my first child, that journey truly began. Balancing my growing family with the demands of running a company isn’t easy, but it fuels my determination.
I want potential clients to know that Digit Systems isn’t just about equipment. It’s about understanding that behind every MRI or CT scanner is someone’s health, someone’s family, someone’s future. Our passion is making sure those machines function flawlessly, because in this industry, dependability means everything.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
While I might not be a household name in the industry just yet, I’ve found success by embracing honesty, reasonableness, and open communication. In my experience, the “hard sell” approach can backfire, especially in a field like ours where trust is essential.
My philosophy is that transactions are just the beginning. The true sales magic happens when you create genuine value for clients. Instead of obsessing over how I can profit, my focus is on how my clients can grow and succeed with my help. When clients see me as invested in their bottom line, the sales naturally follow. It’s less about knocking on doors to hawk unneeded products, and more about organically cultivating need and then providing the perfect solution. I believe in a true win-win strategy, building relationships rooted in both expertise and shared growth.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
While I’m not the founder of Digit Systems, I’m deeply invested in its success. As CEO, I work closely with Diego, the company’s owner and a true visionary. Our story began back in 2014 at RSNA, the industry’s biggest trade show. Diego’s company was a trusted supplier for my previous employer, and he saw potential in my approach.
I joined Digit Systems with a clear mission: put the right people in the right roles. My first discovery? The company’s best salesperson was packing boxes! With a few adjustments, we were already seeing increased efficiency. I jumped in wherever needed – warehouse, sales floor, even accounting – building systems and teams along the way. After three years of restructuring, Diego recognized my commitment and drive by handing me the CEO title. His passion lies in technical innovation, and together, we make a formidable team. Today, we strategize on Digit Systems’ future while ensuring the day-to-day operations support our ambitious growth plans.
