We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Celeste Viciere a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Celeste, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I had always worked for other people and enjoyed the work I did. I had a masters in counseling and I never went for my license. I was complacent at my job. I put everything into my job and was demoted. I was demoted from my job. I took a day to process what happened and then I told myself, “I am disposable”. That was a defining moment in my career because, I decided, I need to go for my clinical license. I went for my clinical license, was able to find a job making 20,000$ more than what I was making and then decided to create my own brand.
Celeste, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Celeste. People know me as “Celeste The Therapist”. I am therapist from Boston, MA. My goal is to help people “Shift the way you think”. Most times we get stuck in our trauma or situations that have taken place in their life. Many people do not understand how to identify their emotions create a plan for change. I use to feel stuck in my circumstances but continued to work through them. I started surrounding myself with people, content, books to help me learn and change my mindset. I created a private practice, where I work with individuals. After realizing so many people do not understand mental health in an effort to reach more people, I created a podcast to teach people around the world about mental health and the power they have within to create change.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I thought my circumstances in life growing up was a reason as to why I would never succeed. I had to learn that if I changed my way of thinking I can change my circumstances. I did not know that my mind only has access to information that it has been exposed to in my past. I learned the importance of feeding my mind a new narrative in life. Once I started changing what I exposed myself to, I started to see the possibilities in life for my present and future self.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your firm or practice?
When I decided I was going to open a private practice in 2015, I was able to pull money from my home equity and pay a years rent on my office space. Doing this was low risk (my mortgage went up 20$ a month ) and it allowed me not to feel pressure of trying to get clients and keep up with my overhead.
