We recently connected with Rekita Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rekita, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents have always believed in me and taught me never to give up. This gave me confidence and allowed me to face whatever came my way. I have many stories, but the most impactful was in 2005 when I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I was a single mom of two boys, ages 3 and 8. I faced a year of treatment that made it by far the most challenging year of my life. I could not do much of anything for myself or my children. They supported me in every way they could have until things were better. Although this was the worst situation, it let me know I could overcome any obstacles. I decided to return to school to obtain my Bachelor’s degree while working full-time; I stepped out of my comfort zone of being a preschool teacher and got a better job. I sold my house and moved to a large city to get a better education for my special needs son, and in 2019, I stepped on faith to start my own business. My journey wasn’t easy, but giving up wasn’t an option, no matter how hard things may have seemed. I am forever grateful for the support and encouragement they have given me my entire life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Rekita Brown, a Professional Home Organizer in Jacksonville, Florida. I am also certified in Interior Design & Home Staging. I’ve been organized since childhood and have always been fascinated with home design. My room was always tidy, and things were always neat. As an adult, my priority in my house or with any job was to find a way to make my day as productive as possible. I made sure things were set up to work for me. It could have been my bedroom, kitchen, or desk at my job. I’m the same with my clients. What works for one client may not work for the next. I’m not there to judge but to help them and make their lives easier. I offer complete home organization services. I organize kitchens, pantries, closets, bedrooms, bathrooms, home offices, kids’ playrooms, and garages. I also offer packing and unpacking with a complete home setup. Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I launched my business at the end of 2019 and was ready to take off in 2020, but we all know what happened in 2020—the Pandemic! My initial thought was… Wow! Now that I’m ready to get some clients, no one will allow me in their homes, with or without a mask. Because I always look at a glass half full instead of half empty, I tried to think of what I could do to better myself during this time. During my downtime, I decided to get certified in Interior Design and Home Staging. Although I wasn’t busy with clients, I stayed busy learning about something that could add to my services. One thing about me is that I can pull a positive out of any situation.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
It’s definitely my personality! I have always been a people person and an actual, genuine person. Before leaving the corporate world, many called me Mrs. Customer Service! When people meet me, my personality is always something that I’m complimented on. When I get clients by word of mouth, I always hear: They said you were the sweetest, or she is her brand. It’s been that way for as long as I can remember. I have clients that we still check on each other. My personality is me!
