Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sergio Sanchez Selva. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sergio, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I have always been passionate about cinema and architecture, although initially, I approached them separately. I studied architecture in Spain, and it’s a field that I enjoyed immensely due to my love for design. Concurrently, cinema has been an art form that I have consistently immersed myself in since childhood. While working as an architect, I decided to explore my interest in cinema further by taking a course in set design and art direction. This experience made me realize that I could merge two worlds that deeply intrigued me. However, at that point, I hadn’t considered it as a viable professional option. Job opportunities presented themselves after completing a master’s degree at a film school, and gradually, the reality of my current profession began to take shape.
It wasn’t a pursuit from the beginning but rather something that organically developed over time.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I work as a set designer in the film industry in New York for a few years now. Before I arrived, I worked for a while in the film industry in Spain, but during the pandemic, I had a job opportunity here in NYC, and I was eager to experience working in the United States. Since then, I have been living in Brooklyn and continued developing my profession through various projects. I work in the art department of films, shows, or sometimes commercials, where, along with other professionals, I design the sets where the plot will unfold during filming. I have had the opportunity to work on shows like Wu-Tang: An American Saga, Winston, American Horror Stories and Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live
It’s very interesting to see the entire process of developing a space until its construction. I really enjoy my work.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The driving force behind my creative journey is the excitement of taking on diverse projects. Each new project represents a unique opportunity to immerse myself in and understand different worlds, pushing the boundaries of my universe. The overarching goal is a commitment to constant evolution, a journey that keeps me consistently expanding my creative horizons.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In my view, supporting artists, creatives, and fostering a thriving creative ecosystem involves encouraging a widespread appreciation for culture. While larger cities like NYC boast numerous cultural opportunities, it’s crucial for people in smaller cities to actively support local initiatives. Even in places with fewer options, attending exhibitions or events, regardless of personal preferences, becomes a significant gesture. Any form of art is an expression, and acknowledging an artist’s effort to convey something uniquely contributes to a vibrant creative community.
