Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ava Byrd. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Ava thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
During my time studying fashion design at Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising– Los Angeles, I immersed myself in the world of fashion by honing my craft through hands-on experience while working backstage at prestigious events such as New York Fashion Week and various coast-coast fashion shows as a skilled dresser. It was during these formative years that I discovered the importance of organization and management in ensuring the success of seamless backstage productions. Drawing upon my eye for detail and skills as a designer and stylist, I translated the visions of fashion designers on the runway. Gaining recognition for my ability to anticipate and execute their creative concepts.
Recognizing a need for backstage management and temporary staffing within the Creative Arts Industry in the San Francisco Bay Area, I found ByrdSong Productions (BSP) in 2008. With my wealth experience and a passion for fashion, BSP quickly became a trusted resource for event organizers, fashion designers and productions teams alike. We worked hard to set the standard for professionalism and excellence in the industry. BSP mantra “Expected the Unexpected” is our commitment to delivering unparalleled services.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Ava Byrd- Founder of ByrdSong Productions, where we specialize in backstage management for the Creative Arts Industry. We create the blueprint for behind-the-scenes productions by recruiting, managing creative professionals to execute the vision of our clients. ByrdSong Productions began with fashion show production, quickly expanding to editorial, theater, and backstage management opportunities.
Have you ever had to pivot?
YES!!!!! COVID-19 pandemic brought challenges, prompting me to pivot my business model and adapt to changes of the creative arts industry. Committed to supporting artists during uncertain times and adhering to new California laws regarding independent contractors, I made the bold decision to transition from booking and managing artistic talent to exclusively representing my services.
In 2022, my journey led me to join the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). Working on prestigious Broadway musicals such as “Mean Girls,” “Ain’t Too Proud,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Disney On Ice,” along with others in the wardrobe department.
My new normal forced me to embrace change, finding new avenues to contribute. My new journey led me to rebrand my business from ByrdSong Productions to A. Byrdsong. While the name may have changed, my unwavering dedication to excellence remains the same.
I am looking forward to my new artistic journey as a Costume Designer for upcoming stage play Pal Joey for Alterena Theater- Alameda, CA. Spring – 2024.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I love working behind the scenes. This allows my work to speak volumes on its own merit. I shy away from seeking the spotlight. My clientele is built on the foundation of trust and word-of-mouth recommendations. I hope my work stands as a testament to my unwavering commitment to excellence, leaving a mark on every project and artists I work with.
