We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dolled By Dimpss. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dolled By below.
Alright, Dimpss thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was working as a Customer Service Representative while modeling in my spare time. I knew all along that the office job wasn’t for me. Most days, during my work shift, I would sit in my cubicle, twirling my headset just daydreaming about my next photoshoot. At this time, I was just 19 years old and had a newfound love for makeup. Well, I have always loved lipgloss, blush and eyeshadow.. but I really began to tap into the art of makeup when I started modeling. A friend of mine wanted to pursue photography. Since he knew that I loved taking pictures, he asked me to start modeling for him. This is what pushed me to teach myself how to properly apply makeup. I would literally sit at home and watch YouTube videos about makeup all day and all night! Eventually, I started going live online and sharing what I was learning. I built a community of people who were inspired, motivated and influenced by my content and it felt amazing! Just under one year after becoming a social media influencer, I quit my office job and never looked back! That was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life. I took a leap of faith and now I am so blessed to be doing something that I love everyday!
Dimpss, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Many of my supporters may know me as Dimpss the Makeup Artist or Dolled by Dimpss, but my full name is Tiera Williams. I quit my office job in early 2017 and pursued my career in the beauty industry in September of 2017. Being called to operate in my purpose, I was able to empower, motivate and inspire people all over the world to do what they love. I was invited to work as the Master Makeup Artist at Truly Urs Nail Salon of St Clair Shores, MI in 2018. From there, I gained a great clientele as well as exposure on social media. I am well known for my versatility and creativity in the multitudinous ways that I do makeup. My work is ever-changing because I love to be creative, I can give “Soft and Sultry” or “Bold and Fun” makeup looks.
I use various makeup brands and products because every client has different needs. Some of my favorite brands are: Girl Code Cosmetics, NARS, Too Faced, ELF Cosmetics, NYX Cosmetics, One Size Beauty and Morphe just to name a few. I never limit myself to one specific style of makeup because I adapt well to my clients’ needs. I offer mini client consultations and intake forms prior to each appointment for the best outcome.
Many clients experience being unhappy with makeup and I always reassure them that they are in great hands and that I will do my best to create a look that exceeds their expectations. What sets me apart from other service providers in my city is my punctuality. My clients love the fact that I am always at work and ready to service them on time.
I am most proud of myself for two accomplishments. First, being an Award Winning Master Makeup Artist. In September of 2023 I was invited to attend the Detroit Choice Awards where I was awarded “Detroit’s Favorite Makeup Artist.” The other accomplishment was filming my very first business commercial/short film which dropped February 2024.
To my future clients, I want you to know that when you sit in my chair, it’s not just an ordinary makeup appointment, you will receive one of the greatest self care experiences ever!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love being able to channel my creativity on a regular basis. Most of my clients come in and have absolutely no idea what look they are going for. While this used to be a challenge for me, I grew to love it. Being a Makeup Artist has shown me my true strength, I actually work great under pressure.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I remember being so excited about moving into my very first private suite. I signed my lease agreement in August of 2022 and opened to the public in September of 2022. I loved the space, my business partners were great and the aesthetic was in alignment with my vision as well. I really thought this was going to be something long term because of how well everything seemed to be falling in place for me. Sadly, in June of 2023, the building started having elevator issues. This was a challenge for my business, seeing as though my suite was located on the sixth floor. The first time the elevator broke down wasn’t all bad, but unfortunately it was just a temporary fix.
One hot summer day in the middle of July, I came into work and found the elevator broken once again! I knew that I had a client coming in the next few hours to be serviced for her baby shower. I was so anxious, but instead of panicking, I chose to text and inform my client. I honestly expected her to cancel her appointment but she didn’t. I was so grateful that she chose to still come in for her makeup experience. I met her at the door with an ice cold bottle of water and I’m so glad I did because when I opened the door, she could hardly speak. This day touched me so much because I remember how anxious I was and how out of breath my client was when she arrived. I had to make a change, QUICKLY! Over the following months, I was on a search to find a new space to service my clients. The search was a bit rough but I made it happen. In October 2023, I moved to my new location. I found a new space that is comfortable for my clients and the best part is that I am now on the first floor.
