Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katie Nance. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Katie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My first attempt at making a stained glass panel was in 2013. At the time, there were very few resources online to teach yourself. I arrived at a point where I got stuck and started to look up local classes. The only class I could find was out of my budget until my aunt gifted me a class for my birthday in 2019. From there, I was able to supplement what I learned in the class with information available online, and a wonderful community of glass artists I found through social media.
In my journey to master stained glass, I’ve come to recognize the importance of two fundamental skills: glass cutting and soldering. Cutting glass demands precision and an understanding of its unique properties, as even the slightest imperfection can alter the outcome significantly. Similarly, soldering plays a pivotal role in joining the pieces together, with the quality of solder lines greatly influencing the overall appearance of the finished piece.
Despite my passion and dedication, the lack of accessibility to resources was a serious obstacle. This challenge, which I believe many aspiring artists encounter, fueled my determination to make stained glass art more accessible to others. It inspired my vision to open a storefront that not only provides supplies and classes but also serves as a community hub for artists of various crafts. Through this endeavor, I aim to create a supportive environment where individuals can learn, create, and showcase their talents, thus fostering a vibrant and inclusive artistic community.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello, I’m Katie, the proud owner of East End Glassworks. My journey into this business was fueled by a deep love for glass and a desire to share its beauty with others. I pour my heart and soul into crafting high-quality stained glass panels, both large and small, with the belief that everyone deserves to have a touch of color in their space, regardless of budget constraints.
Stained glass is a timeless art form known for its enduring beauty and longevity. With my products, I aim to offer stunning glass decor that will stand the test of time. In addition to my original artworks, I selectively take on custom orders and repairs, prioritizing excellence in every project.
Beyond creating stained glass, I aspire to establish a warehouse in East End, Houston, TX, that buzzes with creative energy. It will be a vibrant space where artists come together to learn, create, and explore various art forms. Alongside selling glass supplies, I envision hosting classes taught by myself and other artists, nurturing a supportive environment for artistic growth. Additionally, I plan to feature a retail space showcasing the works of local artists, providing a space people can intentionally come to support local makers and artists.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When I was a kid, I had an art teacher look at a pastel landscape I had poured my heart and soul into and say, “You at least have to try.” That resonated with me way more than it should, and being a musician, I told myself “Well, I am just not a visual artist. Music is my art form.” I didn’t even allow myself to consider that I was a valid visual artist until I took a required art class in college and loved it. I am still constantly having to unlearn the voice in my head that says that my art is not good enough to share with the world. I am SO thankful for the supportive community around me that helps me realize my value as an artist.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Art in all its forms is so powerful. It speaks to people on a level that words cannot express. I can vividly remember sanctuaries I have walked into and been completely engrossed in the stained glass I was surrounded by. Being in the music industry, I am constantly seeing how powerful songs are to the human soul. I feel that the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the privilege to participate, in my own little way, in something that is divine. Art can heal, it can transform the energy of a space, it brings people together and I am so thankful to have a part in that.
