We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chanda Mitchell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chanda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
During the pandemic, burning candles in my home was apart of my daily routine. I have always loved candles however, working 100% remote intensified my love for them even more!! The simple aroma from burning a candle would literally change the atmosphere and my mood. Burning candles give me sense of inner peace.
My inspiration for the company name ignited from my late grandmother, Mavis Pocahontas Reid Hall and my late mother Hattie Mae Hall. Two extraordinary women who I hold very dear to my heart. Naming my company after them allows me to leave a legacy behind so that their light will shine forever!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello, I’m Chanda Mitchell, from the small town of Wilson, fondly known as Wide Awake, in eastern North Carolina. I proudly earned my BS in Social Work from The North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University “Aggie Pride”, and later pursued my MS through the Joint Master Social Work Program at UNCG & NC A&T SU. As a passionate advocate for social work and community engagement, I am also honored to be a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, contributing to the values of service and sisterhood.
In the dynamic world of my career, I wear multiple hats as a Senior Program Manager in the pharmaceutical industry and a part-time therapist. Juggling these responsibilities keeps me both challenged and fulfilled, with a busy schedule that reflects my commitment to making a positive impact.
Beyond the corporate realm, I channel my entrepreneurial spirit into running a candle business. I envision not just selling candles but establishing a candle bar—a space where individuals can craft their own candles while immersing themselves in a vibrant atmosphere.
Outside of work, I cherish moments spent with my husband, Cecil Mitchell, and my cherished family and of course my girls! While spare time is a luxury, I prioritize creating a lasting legacy for our hopefully someday children (insert prayers). My overarching goal is to transition into a private practice, focusing solely on mental health while nurturing the growth of the candle bar concept. Therapy and Candles are a great pair; They mesh very well.
For me, candles are more than just products; they are synonymous with self-care. As a therapist, I understand the significance of these small, flickering lights in the journey of self-healing. There’s a unique power in lighting a candle, letting its aroma weave through the air, and witnessing the healing effect it has on the soul.
In this chapter of my life, I am laser-focused on achieving my goals, not only for myself but for the legacy I aspire to leave behind. Each step I take is a deliberate stride towards a future where our children can inherit a world shaped by dedication, resilience, and, of course, the soothing glow of self-care through candles.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
While it’s tempting to compare and contrast, I encourage you to remain steadfast in your vision and focus on the unique qualities that set your brand apart.
Here are a few key points to keep in mind:
Define Your Brand: Clearly define your brand identity and the values that distinguish your business. Stay true to these principles as they will guide your decisions and actions.
Stay on Your Path: It’s easy to get sidetracked by what others in your industry are doing. While it’s essential to be aware of market trends, avoid losing sight of your unique approach and the goals you’ve set for your business.
Discourage Discouragement: Don’t allow external opinions or the progress of others to discourage you. Every business has its own trajectory, and comparing your journey to others can lead to unnecessary self-doubt.
Celebrate Your Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small. By focusing on your achievements, you’ll build confidence and motivation to keep pushing forward.
Remember, success in business is a personal journey. Embrace the challenges, learn from the setbacks, and celebrate every milestone. Stay true to your vision, and you’ll pave the way for a business that authentically reflects your passion and values.
