We recently connected with Jordan Humphrey and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, thanks for joining us today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
Gen X is notorious for my most hated misinformed phrase. “Life Insurance is a scam.” Hearing those words grinds my gears. This generation of people is stubborn in mindset and convincing them that this is something needed is impossible. I scroll through social media daily and see scenarios like this one; A 48-year-old man falls over due to a heart attack with no savings or life insurance. 24 hours later the family has created a GoFundMe. The average cost of a funeral and traditional burial is $25,000. After the GoFundMe reaches the goal set to pay for the funeral, who will pay the mortgage and car payment? I believe a $100,000 life insurance policy that costs on average $60 a month is an investment rather than a scam.
To Each Their Own!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I work in the insurance industry and treat every client as a part of my family. I specialize in Life Insurance, Health Insurance, and Medicare, and have contracts with major carriers to create policies tailored to each client’s unique needs. In my career, I have encountered situations where clients have been placed in policies that cost more than necessary. However, I aim to establish a long-term relationship with my clients and help them get the coverage they need. For this reason, I listen carefully to understand their needs rather than just responding.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The journey I have taken has not been an easy one. It has taught me many life lessons and involved a lot of soul-searching. I now realize it would have been wise to research the insurance “game” before diving in head first. The first red flag was starting with a captive agency with no contracts with carriers in South Carolina. When I got to speak to a prospect, I “opened” the sale but didn’t “close” the sale. Since there were no contracts in South Carolina, I couldn’t close a sale without a license in the client’s state. Returning to the beginning of this journey, I took out a title loan on my car and put all my savings into my new career. Getting licensed, taking exam courses, the exam itself, and fingerprinting were not cheap. I also put $1000 into the agency for leads, but the return on investment was zero. I did nothing while working there. Near the end of December 2022, I finally found a supportive, non-captive agency that allowed me to work in my state. However, my money had already been drained. Surviving and making sure my kids’ needs were met was a constant struggle. In this industry, you need money to make money. In the summer of 2023, my car was repossessed, and my kids and I were evicted from our home. However, I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I know that it is possible to recover from everything that has happened.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
It is fantastic to read a message expressing gratitude, like “Thank you so much; you have done more than any other agent.” I have earned numerous referrals by diligently searching for policies that fit my client’s needs and budgets. Recently, I have received calls and messages from people who need my assistance because one of my clients recommended me. Although it is taking some time, I am gradually building my reputation and brand, and success is starting to come my way.
