We were lucky to catch up with Ryan Timms recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear from you about what you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry and why it matters.
Video content has become so mainstream. Technology has made it easier than ever to record video and share it with your audience. That does not make the specialty skills of filmmakers and storytellers less valuable.
Large corporations are asking more of their employees. Hiring descriptions often include skills from multiple disciplines ranging from copywriting, graphic design, photography, and video editing. 1 person cannot do all of these things well.
Jack of all trades master of none.
It is important for companies to realize the value of their brand is reflected in their content. Investing in brand storytelling helps build brand loyalty and awareness, ultimately leading to more qualified customers before they even engage with your product.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Ryan Timms. I have been making videos since I was very young, starting with making action sports videos with my friends. I spent my educational career traveling the country making videos and focusing on my technical craft.
My career quickly took a shift towards documentary and journalism. My style of filmmaking fit nicely in this genre and I loved learning about other people and telling their stories.
Today, I create branded content and documentary films for brands like Bobcat, Red Bull, and Lionsgate all with the help of an incredible team I have helped curate over the last 5 years. Together we travel, sharing stories of customer success or unique triumph.
As I continue to grow my films have become increasingly more personal, attempting to create a more human connection with my audiences in a big-hearted way. Our content has received creative awards in various branded content and documentary-focused categories from the Viddys, Tellys, Hermes, and AAF.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Reputation is everything in this industry. You have to be good to people and that will come back to you. I am a firm believer in ‘treat others how you want to be treated’.
My reputation grew because I continued to provide value to my colleagues and delivered on my promises. Be a good person and do what you say you’re going to do.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I am so full from all of the people I have met.
Being a documentary filmmaker, I am often asking strangers to share intimate details about their lives with me. Each and every one of them is willing to share a small piece of themselves with me and my team. The sum of all of those pieces helps shape the creative I am today.
You learn something, good or bad, from every person you meet. These little pieces have helped shape my art.
