We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Luisa Rangel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Luisa, appreciate you joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
I am a Business Administrator, but I have always been interested in the entertainment industry.
When I was 15 years old I started my modeling career, I started doing my first job as a tv host, and at 21 I received my university degree, I became interested in public relations and started working with different companies without leaving aside the entertainment. Years later with the digital boom, I started creating digital content, I was always interested in the fashion and beauty industry, so I started with beauty and fashion tutorials.
When I moved to the United States I began to contact different networks whose market was female, my idea was to offer them my tutorials, and that way I could have a greater reach, I sent about 100 messages to different pages, at that time only one responded and offered me to buy my videos and create content for their audience, that’s when I saw the opportunity to generate content for others, and that’s how I earned money for my first job as a content generator.
Today my work is remote, I am Editor in Chief of Latin Glam, a network focused on women, leadership, fashion, and beauty. Producer of Tu Ritmo, a network from New York focused on music and cinema, I make contributions with different media in different countries including Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala, and different cities in the United States, I create written content, video content, and chat with artists and personalities about their careers and stories.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My current job is based on bringing relevant information from the world of entertainment and pop culture, one of the things I enjoy the most is talking with personalities and learning about their stories, as an independent worker in this industry it is valuable to know that we have all had a beginning generally difficult, it has been a path of challenges and closed doors. I focus on my conversations so that you know details that you did not know about the artist, and see beyond fame what the conventional media show us.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Helping a creative these days is simple, through social networks it is enough with a like, a comment of support, and if you want to go beyond a donation. If you are a person who has an attractive audience on networks, you can help people with their entrepreneurship to have a larger audience, today we are all micro-influencers, and we can all support each other, this is not a competition, this it’s not about the numbers, it’s about community and support.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The entertainment industry is what we would call soft power, it’s the easiest way you get to be heard. And that’s really the reward you have in this industry. Many people are not willing to talk about politics or religion, but they listen to music, watch series and movies and that is the channel to bring information and make changes, that is what surprises me about the power of entertainment.
My greatest satisfaction is that if you watched one of my videos or read one of my articles and something good remains for your day or your life, it is the greatest reward I can receive.
