Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chettara Hunter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Chettara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, one thing many business owners consider is donating a percentage of sales or profits to an organization or cause. We’d love to hear your thoughts and the story behind how and why you chose the cause or organization you donate to.
Yes. I tend to donate to various organizations and events within my community. One organization that I love to donate and participate in the most is Detroit/Downriver Chapter of A. Philip Randolph Institute. They do various programs for the community like Sister 2 Sister where the goal was to give feminine hygiene products to young ladies in need, From the Barber to the Polls, where they register voters and provide haircuts to those who are in need, and a few more that involve helping new moms get a healthy start, providing care packages to the homeless, and etc. As someone who believes in the power of community and building it up, being able to be active and donate where I can makes me feel like I’m doing my part. There is always more than can be done but every bit helps/counts.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As the eldest of three siblings hailing from Detroit, I’ve always danced to the beat of my own drum. With a penchant for pineapple on pizza and a perpetually Halloween-esque vibe, I’ve embraced the unconventional with open arms. Growing up, my Grandma was my guiding light, showering me with the tools of creativity. Whether it was a paintbrush or a bassoon, she never hesitated to indulge my artistic whims. Then, one day, she gifted me a camera, and it felt like destiny had found its lens. From that moment on, I knew I had found my true home in the world of photography.
I have always been captivated by the interplay of vibrant and moody tones in photography, finding a certain allure in the contrast between bright, energetic hues and deep, evocative shadows. The way colors can evoke emotions and tell stories has always fascinated me, leading me to explore this dynamic range in my photographic endeavors. Alongside my passion for photography, I also find immense joy in ghostwriting children’s books. There’s something magical about crafting tales that ignite young imaginations, weaving stories that transport readers to whimsical worlds filled with wonder and adventure. Whether through the lens of a camera or the stroke of a pen, I cherish the opportunity to express creativity and evoke emotion in both visual and literary realms. I am excited though because this year I’ll be taking a step out of the ghost realm and working on my own Children’s Chapter Book and a Tea Recipe Book.
What are you most proud of and what are the main things you want potential clients/followers/fans to know about you/your brand/your work/ etc.? I’m proud of me for being willing to fight for and show up for myself. When I started photography, I didn’t really show my face or have a fully developed website. So, when I met a client for coffee after emailing one another for two weeks I wasn’t prepared for what happened. This potential client sat down and asked if I was really the Chettara she was communicating with. Of course I said yes and that’s when she said and I can quote this because I for sure will never forget, “Blacks can’t be photographers, especially for a wedding. Go shoot a barbecue, those photos you shared are probably stolen since that’s what your people do.” She got up, threw her thankfully warm and not steaming hot drink on me and stormed out. To say I was angry doesn’t sum up or even come close to how I felt BUT I had to remember who I am and that I am a descendant of Kings and Queens. From that moment on I made sure to show my face on emails and made sure my picture was on my profile. I looked at my face in the mirror every morning and spoke truth and affirmations to myself. It was hard at first but became easier as I went along. It’s important that we don’t let people dim our light due to their own prejudices or even thoughts about what you do. What matters is showing up for you and continuing to do what you love and pour into your passions.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the real magic happens when I witness my clients’ reactions to their imagery. There’s nothing quite like the joy of receiving messages from them, filled with excitement as they share snapshots of where they’ve proudly displayed their prints and albums. It’s a heartwarming feeling, knowing that I’ve become a small but meaningful part of their lives, even if our time together was brief. Equally fulfilling is when I share my work and receive comments from people expressing how it resonates with them, evoking memories or emotions from their own lives. Their words are like a warm embrace, affirming the significance of my art and inspiring me to keep creating.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
For me, word of mouth and personal interactions have proven to be the most effective way of attracting clients. While I may not excel at maintaining a strong social media presence, I pour my energy into providing exceptional experiences for my clients, starting from our initial communication to the delivery of their final images and products. When I’m out and about and find myself in conversations with potential clients, I prioritize authenticity and genuine connection. By being myself and actively listening to their needs, I aim to offer insights and ideas that align with their vision, ultimately building trust and rapport.
