We recently connected with Hilary Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
Hilary, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I used to daydream about owning a business while I was working a corporate job. When I finally made the decision to leave that job, I thought I was taking the biggest risk of my life to become an entrepreneur. At the time it was!
But now, 13 years later, I look back and realize that was just one small step (or leap) into the unknown. Owning a business will challenge you in ways you can’t completely understand until you’re in the middle of it.
I’ve had to make tough calls about closing a business, ending a partnership and letting go of employees. I’ve also made the decision to bet on a business idea that I wasn’t 100% sure about. And I’ve had to bet on myself and my ability to rise to the occasion.
Entrepreneurship, just like life, is filled with risks. The question I ask myself is “Will I regret NOT trying this? Or will I regret making a mistake?” The answer is almost always to take the leap and give it a try, because I don’t want to die with the regret of having NOT bet on myself and my dreams.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
There’s a saying that goes “What got you here, won’t get you there.” This is especially true of building a business.
The skills that you used to get your business off the ground, as awesome as they were, aren’t the ones you’ll need to take your business to the next level. Every chapter of growth in your business will require new skills!
That’s where Business Growth & Leadership Coaching come in and that’s exactly what I offer. I work one-on-one with business owners & entrepreneurs to help them learn how to grow their business “The Sustainable Way”!
I love that entrepreneurs are ambitious and shoot for the moon! But I do not love the hustle & grind culture that says “work your a$$ off now, so you can enjoy your life later”. That’s an old paradigm that has to change.
I help business owners learn how to create Sustainable Success. It’s about being intentional and thoughtful in how you grow your business, so you can enjoy the process and the end result. Both now…and long into the future!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivoting is a big part of owning a business and I’ve learned to love the process!
When I started Hatch Tribe over 8 years ago, we primarily hosted in-person networking events for women entrepreneurs in Charleston, SC. In the years that followed, we expanded our offerings to include business coaching, group coaching, masterminds, online programs, retreats, conferences, and an online membership. We even explored opening chapters in other cities.
All of these offerings were “tests”. Truly. We quickly brought new ideas to market, tested our audience’s desire for them, and then doubled-down or moved on.
Today Hatch Tribe looks very different. We offer one-on-one business coaching, a business mastermind program, retreats, and a few downloadable templates. It’s the perfect mix of what I want to do and what our audience wants.
Pivoting is a good thing. Embrace it! It helps you hone the direction of your business and your life!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Personal referrals! Most of my clients found me through a prior client or professional colleague. And I know I wouldn’t have those clients if I hadn’t done a damn good job.
So do what you say you’ll do. Over-deliver for your clients. And they’ll be the source of rave reviews and referrals for you!
