Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mike Desatnick . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Mike, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend art school until after a tour of combat in Viet Nam (I wouldn’t recommend this particular approach). Hindsight is always 20/20. Looking back, it would have been nice if I had become a little more serious about pursuing my art when I was younger. But, maturity is a very important part of becoming an artist and trying to reach your artistic goals.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Mike Desatnick was born in Hammond, Indiana. After graduating from high school, he worked in the local steel mills. He began his art career by enrolling at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, after a decorated tour of combat in Vietnam.
The faculty of the American Academy of Art invited Mike to join them. He was a popular award winning instructor. In the summers he traveled to the Southwest to perfect his fine art skills and desires. In 1978 he moved west to pursue his fine art. Since then his works have been published in every major art magazine and several books.
His paintings hang in many prominent collections and he has participated in major shows such as Allied Artists NY, NY; Artist of America Denver, CO; The Western Heritage Sale Houston, TX; Peking China Exhibition, Peking, China; and Masters of the West, Los Angeles, CA. His work is also included in the U.S. Art in Embassies Program.
Mike currently resides with his wife Dyan in Durango, CO. A body of his works and current painting can be seen on his website <mikedesatnick.com>.
The Artist’s Statement
My paintings are a reflection of life’s experiences of varied people, their traditions and cultures. I am privileged and proud to record them respectfully.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative in your experience?
I couldn’t imagine a life other than being an artist and if I were to get a second chance at life, I don’t think I would be as fortunate as I am. I also can’t imagine a world without art.
“ ART IS NOURISHMENT FOR THE SOUL”

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Being an artist is a part of one’s DNA. You need to pursue what is in your heart and soul or you will feel that something in your life is missing.
