Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sebastian Hoyos. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sebastian, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Our mission at Jade and Elise Obsidian Coffee Company is giving back an extra percentage to our farmers and the community of Angostura, Antioquia, Colombia. We also invest and give back to sustainability in renewables by providing money to an energy company, Unergy, in Colombia that install renewable energy.

Sebastian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We at Jade and Elise Obsidian Coffee Company started growing coffee on our own farm in Angostura, Antioquia, Colombia in 2015. Our goal was to bring the coffee to the USA, but we had no idea how to make this a reality, so we sold our green coffee beans to co-ops who would distribute the bags to roasters in Colombia.
In December 2020, we found Those Coffee People online and contacted them to see if they could help us export the coffee from our farm to importing it to the USA via airplane since it’s the freshest way. They knew everything to do to help us. We received our first shipment to Belmont, North Carolina in January 2021.
We quickly realized that selling the green coffee beans from our farm to roasters would not be the best way to go about our coffee business. We would not be able to support our missions that we have by doing this, so Sebastian bought three roasters and spent time researching, reading and watching videos on how to roast. We quickly found Alcindo, a graphic designer from the company Roaster to help us design our bags with the coffee plants and famous bird of Colombia, the macanaw..
Then we started selling our own roasted coffee through our website www.jeobsidiancoffee.com as well as participate in events and farmer’s markets.
We take pride in growing and roasting our very own coffee beans so others can enjoy a little taste of Colombia.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
For us working at farmer’s markets, events and being inside of a few stores.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We believe the quality of our coffee, being transparent of our business to our customers, responding to customers in a timely manner and making sure their orders arrive swiftly has helped us a lot with building reputation.
