Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nena Styles. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Nena thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
There’s a common misconception that business and faith should be separate. Corporations have indeed evolved over the years and are demonstrating an appreciation for those who are committed to their faith, especially with today’s culture of inclusivity. However, there’s a limited amount of corporations today that embrace faith-based solutions for their employees. According to Pew Research, there are an estimated 63% of the U.S. population who are Christians. Yet, businesses are following a motto that encourages faith-based solutions outside the company, rather than embracing this solution to help improve staff stability as a health and wellness benefit. In my line of work, I have spoken to executives from different organizations who are either not ready or unable to see how faith-based professional development is an opportunity for employees to receive the care they need to help improve their well-being and is aligned with their core values.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a native Cincinnatian, born in ‘76 with a deep love for Christ, family/friends and an undeniable appreciation for great food, all in that order! I am a self-published author of the book Start & Steward Your God-given Business, 180° Transforming Scriptures & Prayer Journal. I am the host of the podcast The Faith-based Workplace Show w/Nena Styles as well as the founder/CEO of TLC Dispatching Academy and faith-based professional development company, CADRE Solutions.
My journey into the field of Faith-based professional development began unexpectedly. This journey was a true leap of faith when I followed the path of entrepreneurship. Before establishing CADRE Solutions, I worked for a Fortune 500 company for about seven years, and toward the end of my tenure I began to entertain the thought of working for myself.
Then, to my surprise, my employer at the time made a significant change due to budget cuts and eliminated a huge percentage of staff within two departs, mine being one of them. As for me, I could only respond with a sense of gratitude because months up to my departure I had remained in prayer for direction on pursuing my entrepreneurial aspirations.
So needless to say, this was my door of opportunity. From there my prayer request included specific details, so I asked for my next field and was told “Life Coach”. I then followed up by asking for the type of Life Coach and was told “Career”. Well, to be honest, this direction was a no-brainer. It was an obvious path considering a large part of my career consisted of career development and became even more excited! What I didn’t know waiting around the corner was ministry work tied to this new field of occupation.
Now, years later and with several pivots under my belt, I’m coaching professionals on how to integrate faith and work to pursue a Spirit-led journey. One of the things that ignites my passion the most is helping others reach success at accomplishing their goals, on a large or small scale.
Under the umbrella of deliverables within CADRE Solutions, each service and product follow a holistic approach and are designed to equip my clients with Spirit-led tools to keep them aligned with their goals while partnering with God in their professions. Whether it’s a coaching session, a training program or one of my books, I aim to position my audience to win using their God-given assets and ultimately reach the transformation they hoped to achieve.
Integrating faith into our occupation is a special element and is the preliminary piece to the work produced by CADRE Solutions. However, the distinct emphasis on instructing clients on how to partner with God in their profession is what sets CADRE Solutions apart from its competition. There is an unwavering commitment to biblical standards and a focus on delivering with excellence.
As CADRE Solutions holds to its values and evolves into larger territories on a nationwide and eventually a global scale, its goal is to teach and coach career professionals on how to successfully incorporate faith with work and help businesses create a culture that naturally embraces these principles.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There were pivots in both companies, so with TLC Dispatching, my business began to grow where my clientele reached a tipping point and I was faced with the choice to hire sub-contractors (aka “sub-dispatchers”), or go a whole new direction with the business which was to transform the operations into a learning center and fulfill my real passion. So, after prayer and careful deliberation, I transitioned the company into an online academy.
On the other hand, CADRE Solutions didn’t necessarily reach a cap, yet I could see that God was slowly, but progressively moving me out of the conventional realm of doing business and into more ministry-style work.
Both required huge leaps of faith, but were worth the journeys!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I think this background to this question really ties into the significant pivots I had to make in both businesses. There were moments when I wasn’t sure if the pivots would work. My resilience honestly came in the form of me trusting God in the process. I also exercised my critical thinking skills on a whole new level. This forced me to examine unknown opportunities. Enabling me to be resourceful and find unique solutions. This exploration is a continuous practice that I follow to this day.
An example of this happened when I was forced to cut ties with a business I had partnered with for quite a while. When my company transitioned to a learning center, I began to explore opportunities to work with them on an ongoing basis, so I came up with a referral-based structure that would benefit both companies. This resulted in me speaking with the founder of the company because what I had proposed was foreign to them, but desirable. As a result, we are continuing to do business today.
