We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nadina Taylor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nadina , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
1. Tell us the story of how you came up with the idea for your business? My journey with Junior Chefs of America actually began with a personal health crisis. In 2014, I faced a severe bout of illness that resulted in a significant weight loss due to Gastrointestinal Disorder, stemming from my ongoing battle with Systemic Lupus. It was a challenging time, but it led me to reevaluate my approach to health and wellness.”
Amidst my health struggles, I decided to explore alternative healing methods and pursued education as an Integrative Health Coach. Through this journey, I came to realize the transformative power of food in maintaining health and preventing illness. Inspired by this insight, I founded Junior Chefs of America in 2015.”
Junior Chefs of America is dedicated to promoting healthy eating and cooking skills among children aged 4 to 18. Our programs aim to instill a passion for the hospitality industry through food, empowering young chefs to embrace creativity, sustainability, and community engagement.”
2. How Did You Know This Would Be A Worthwhile Endeavor?
I truly believe that teaching kids how to cook is incredibly worthwhile as it promotes healthier eating habits, cultivates essential life skills like following instructions and problem-solving, fosters cultural appreciation and diversity through exposure to different cuisines, builds confidence and independence, strengthens family bonds through shared experiences, and encourages creativity and exploration in the kitchen.
By mastering cooking tasks and learning about food, children not only develop practical skills but also gain valuable knowledge that can positively impact their overall well-being and personal growth throughout their lives.
3. What was the logic of how I felt this would work?
The logic behind having a cooking school for kids is multifaceted. Firstly, it recognizes that cooking is a fundamental life skill that everyone needs, regardless of age. By starting young, children have more time to develop confidence and proficiency in the kitchen, setting them up for a lifetime of healthy eating and independence.
Additionally, children are naturally curious and eager to learn, making them receptive to new experiences and knowledge. A cooking school tailored for kids like Junior Chefs of America leveraged this curiosity by providing engaging, age-appropriate activities and lessons that not only teach cooking techniques but also instill important values like teamwork, creativity, and cultural appreciation.
Moreover, with the growing concerns about childhood obesity and the importance of nutrition education, a cooking school for kids serves as a proactive measure to promote healthier eating habits and empower children to make informed food choices.
Overall, the logic lies in the belief that teaching children to cook not only equips them with practical skills but also fosters holistic development, preparing them for a lifetime of culinary enjoyment and well-being.
4. Were I solving a problem that no one else was saving?
At Junior Chefs of America, we’re revolutionizing culinary education by integrating STEM classes with our culinary lessons, tackling a problem that no one else was addressing. By combining Science, History, English, and Math with cooking, we’re not only teaching children essential culinary skills but also providing a holistic educational experience that enhances their understanding of the world around them.
What also sets us apart is our commitment to global exploration. Unlike traditional cooking schools, we take our students on a journey across the globe, immersing them in diverse cultures and cuisines. By visiting different places and learning about their culinary traditions firsthand, we’re not just teaching kids how to cook; we’re fostering cultural appreciation, empathy, and a sense of global citizenship. This unique approach not only makes learning fun and engaging but also equips our students with invaluable life skills and perspectives that will serve them well beyond the kitchen.
We not only stand out for our commitment to younger children but also for catering to teenagers aged 15-18 with our exclusive Sous Chef Certification Class. This intensive 10-lesson, 6-week program is designed to ignite a passion for the culinary profession in today’s youth, shaping their future for generations to come.
Our comprehensive curriculum covers introductory to advanced culinary skills, preparing students for a lifelong career in the culinary industry. With classes meeting twice a week, our junior chefs are immersed in a dynamic learning environment led by professional chefs.
This teen course is our unique 5-week culinary school experience, culminating in a thrilling Mystery Basket Graduation. Beyond skill development, our program offers recruitment opportunities and awards a Certificate of Completion, equipping teens with the tools and confidence to pursue their culinary dreams.
5. What gets me most excited?
Junior Chefs of America is not just a cooking school; it’s a transformative journey that cultivates excitement and passion for both children and teens alike. By offering innovative programs that integrate STEM education, global exploration, and professional training, I realize that I am equipping young minds with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to thrive in the culinary industry and beyond.
Through my dedication to fostering creativity, cultural appreciation, and lifelong learning I truly do believe, Junior Chefs of America has the power to shape the future of our youth and, ultimately, change the world—one aspiring chef at a time.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about myself and my passion for helping others. You see, at the core of who I am lies a deep-seated compassion for people and a genuine desire to see them thrive in every aspect of their lives. Whether it’s through a warm smile, a listening ear, or a helping hand, I’ve always found joy in being there for others and supporting them on their journey to becoming their best selves.
As a chef, I believe in the power of food not just to nourish the body, but also to nurture the soul. The culinary world is a nurturing, caring field where every dish is crafted with love and every meal shared is an opportunity to connect and uplift others. That’s why I’ve chosen to specialize as an Integrative Chef, blending my passion for cooking with my desire to promote both physical and mental well-being.
What sets me apart in the culinary world is my unwavering commitment to making a difference. I don’t just want to cook; I want to change lives. That’s why I’m dedicated to building a brand where Junior Chefs aren’t just skilled in the kitchen, but also equipped to give back to their communities and make a positive impact wherever they go. When people think of Junior Chefs, I want them to think of chefs who are not only passionate about food but also passionate about serving others with kindness, compassion, and a whole lot of heart.
I came up with a program called #ProjecJCOA where we give back the community through serving food to seniors and visiting local farms to learn where our food comes from.
The warm feeling I get when I see our kids learning about food, cultures, philanthropy, and caring I get overwhelmed.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
As I reflect on the journey of Junior Chefs, there’s a moment that stands out as a turning point—a moment of uncertainty and doubt, followed by a renewal of faith and purpose. In May 2023, amidst the challenges brought on by the aftermath of Covid-19, I found myself grappling with the harsh reality that our beloved vision might have to come to an end. Bills were mounting, resources were scarce, and the weight of it all seemed too heavy to bear. I remember taking a picture, thanking the kids for seven wonderful years, as I prepared to close the chapter on Junior Chefs.
But then, something miraculous happened. In the summer of 2023, amidst my darkest hour, I felt a gentle nudge from above—a whisper of hope, a reminder that the vision was bigger than me, and that I didn’t have to carry it alone. It was as if God Himself intervened, reassuring me that while I may not be able to continue in the same way, there was still a path forward—a path that would not only preserve the legacy of Junior Chefs but also allow it to flourish in new and unexpected ways.
That’s when the idea of creating Chapters Across the United States was born—a divine revelation that breathed new life into our mission. Instead of giving up, I was called to expand, to empower others to carry the torch of Junior Chefs in their own communities. It was a moment of renewed faith, a reminder that with God’s guidance, all things are possible.
And so, with a heart full of hope and determination, I embarked on this new chapter of our journey. While the road ahead may be filled with challenges and uncertainties, I am filled with a renewed sense of purpose and a deep conviction that Junior Chefs of America will continue to touch lives and make a difference, one chapter at a time.
When we opened back up in September 2023 with the new model of offering the opportunity for others to form their own Junior Chefs of America chapters, everything changed in the most remarkable way. It was like a breath of fresh air infused with renewed hope and excitement.
Suddenly, what had once seemed like the end of a beautiful journey transformed into the beginning of an even grander adventure. As individuals across the country expressed interest in becoming part of the Junior Chefs family, I felt a surge of energy and purpose unlike anything I had experienced before.
This new way of doing business not only invigorated me but also inspired me to dream bigger than ever before. Now, as I envision Junior Chefs of America chapters scattered across the nation, I am filled with a sense of boundless optimism and determination.
With each new chapter formed, our community grows stronger, our impact reaches farther, and our mission to empower young chefs and change lives becomes a reality—one chapter at a time. This refreshed approach has not only revitalized our business but also reignited my passion for making a difference in the lives of children and communities across America.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
When creating a culinary atmosphere that accommodates both novice kids and seasoned chefs, the key is to foster a sense of inclusivity, collaboration, and learning for all. Imagine a kitchen bustling with energy and excitement, where budding young chefs eagerly wield their spatulas alongside experienced culinary masters. Here, everyone has a role to play, whether it’s guiding young hands through basic cooking techniques or sharing advanced culinary wisdom honed over years of experience.
In this environment, seasoned chefs serve as mentors and role models, offering guidance, encouragement, and expertise to their younger counterparts. They create a supportive atmosphere where mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth, and every success is celebrated with pride. Novice kids, in turn, bring fresh perspectives, creativity, and enthusiasm to the kitchen, infusing it with a contagious energy that inspires all.
Through collaborative cooking sessions, hands-on workshops, and shared meals, both novice kids and seasoned chefs learn from each other, building connections and friendships that transcend age and experience. Together, they explore new flavors, experiment with recipes, and discover the joy of creating delicious dishes from scratch.
Ultimately, this culinary atmosphere thrives on the shared passion for food and the shared goal of nurturing the next generation of chefs. It’s a place where culinary dreams take flight, where skills are honed, and where friendships are forged over the shared love of cooking. In this kitchen, everyone has a seat at the table, and together, they create culinary magic that transcends generations.
At Junior Chefs of America, we’ve seamlessly blended the expertise of seasoned chefs with the enthusiasm of novice kids in a unique and rewarding class format. During each class session, the first half is dedicated to our experienced chefs imparting their culinary knowledge and skills to our young chefs-in-training. They guide them through techniques, recipes, and kitchen etiquette, laying a strong foundation for their culinary journey.
During the second half of the class. Here, our graduating Sous Chef Teens ages 15-18, take on the role of mentors, serving as tutors to their younger peers. This mentorship model creates a dynamic learning environment where knowledge flows freely in both directions. While our seasoned chefs provide guidance and support, our graduating Sous Chefs offer fresh perspectives, encouragement, and assistance tailored to the needs of their fellow students.
This approach has proven to be incredibly rewarding for all involved. Our young chefs benefit from personalized attention and support from their peers, while our graduating Sous Chefs gain valuable leadership experience and the satisfaction of passing on their knowledge to the next generation. Meanwhile, our seasoned chefs find fulfillment in witnessing the growth and progress of their students, knowing that they’ve played a part in shaping the future of culinary excellence.
By keeping this method at the heart of our classes, we’ve created a supportive community where everyone feels valued, empowered, and inspired to continue their culinary journey. It’s this sense of camaraderie, shared learning, and mutual respect that keeps our students, tutors, and chefs coming back week after week, eager to learn, teach, and grow together. At Junior Chefs of America, we’re not just creating chefs; we’re fostering a legacy of passion, skill, and mentorship that enriches lives and elevates the culinary world.
