We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Justin Blake. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Justin below.
Justin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned from YouTube and creating an experience of being on production sets going to photographers/directors I looked to for advice and help it’s okay to ask. Knowing what I know I would have started my journey a lot sooner and believed in myself more in the early stages.
My learning skills and ability to learn new things were essential. I can see/hear things and know that I can create them somewhat of a visionary.
Too much information stood in the way of learning it’s okay to take your time and not overload your brain with new ideas and techniques.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Justin Blake but I go by Markell Edits. I just like my middle name Markell better and the way I edited photos and videos I was told was really creative and unique so the “edits” fit perfect. I gravitated heavily to photography from a friend name geno he was a director doing a lot of videos and brought me on plenty sets and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. When I didn’t even have a camera at the time and eventually I finally got one I got from my bestfriend a canon t3i. My bestfriend Dj first introduced me to the camera first and we took pictures of our outfits we wore to highschool. A thing I help solve with my clients is their ideas because its starts as a thought in their head and I am the visionary that can hear this idea and help them bring it to life and that’s what I do turn thoughts into reality. When you bring to life a clients ideas it’s a happy feeling and accomplishment.
I’m most proud of that I’m creating work that people love and can be seen around the world I just want my work to be heard and seen from the big screen to the small screens. Just a representation of that you can do this too.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to be a successful photographer and tell my story through photography and directing photography. Especially within product photography I want my work on billboards im capable of doing that. I want my product photography to help small businesses grow more and more.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I just wish I had a more direct learning experience from highschool that could’ve shown me That this is a thing and something everyone can do. Being from where I grew up and been around I’ve never heard of a photographer. Of course I know it’s people taking pictures. But I never personally knew someone who actually did this. Photography wasn’t a thing taught in my community.
