We recently connected with Diamond Brazile and have shared our conversation below.
Diamond, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
It’s actually really funny. I knew I wanted to be an artist at the age of five. As a toddler, my family and I used to orchestrate coloring book contests and sit around drawing my favorite cartoon characters. I remember being mesmerized when opening up a fresh box of crayons, I’d actually smell them. It was my favorite thing in the world. It just got to the point where coloring and drawing pictures was the only thing I wanted to do. After a while, I was asked the typical “What do you want to be when you grow up” question, and I replied “an artist.” It’s stuck with me ever since.
Diamond, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a self-taught artist. Everything I do, I taught myself through years of practice. I create drawings as well as canvas artworks and sell them to clients. I want those who purchase my work to be able to resonate with something within the artwork they’re purchasing, whether that’s an emotion, thought, or specific idea. I’m most proud of the progress I’ve made over the years and the number of people I’ve been able to interact with and invite into my art making process.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist is creating work which resonates with others. Within my process, I’m essentially taking parts of myself and pouring that into the work or turning those expressions into the artwork. By doing this, I’m giving my clients the opportunity to jump into my shoes to feel what I feel and see what I see. But I ultimately want to allow them the freedom to come up with their very own interpretation of what they believe the artwork conveys and their feelings behind it. I want my audience to see something in my work which they may also see in themselves. I believe that when you find reflections of yourself within an artwork, it means more and can deepen your overall interpretation of the artwork.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I’d say that my personal goal is to simply be able to express myself creatively. I use painting and drawing as a way for me to not only express my emotions, but to ultimately feel like I’m in control of something. As people, we’re not able to control every single event that may occur in our lives, but as the artist, I get to control what happens in my artwork, whether that be my choice of canvas or the colors. Painting allows me to control the narrative.
