Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jalen Moffitt. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jalen, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
My first time earning as an artist was in 2016. It was my very first stage play after making it my career choice. It was with Evans Production and we had “The Power of Love” at the Landers Center in Southaven,Ms. I made at least 200 from the show and I was so grateful for it plus the opportunity to perform on a stage as such. It was encouraging for sure.
Jalen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, I started out as a singer in high school. I sung Tenor in the choral choir. then I ended up going to a different high school and there I had my first stage play, which was Dreamgirls then behind that we did little shop of horror. This was the start of my acting career but to me I was doing it as a hobby. Later, I went to college at the University of Mississippi and in 2012 I changed my Major to theater and from there I got most of my training. In 2016 I had my first day play at the Landers Center where we did the “Power of Love” and we toured the show throughout Mississippi. After this show I continue to pursue different stage plays, murder mysteries, and films throughout the Memphis/mid South area. In 2021 I moved to Atlanta Georgia to continue to pursue my career. I’ve took the leap of faith when I decided to leave Mississippi to continue my career and it’s been so promising because of the people I’ve networked with. I’m attending LS acting studios where I also train and intern as well. It has truly been a journey, because I would never be this far, if I didn’t take the leap of faith to move to Georgia.
Have you ever had to pivot?
So being an actor wasn’t my first choice. I actually wanted to be a college professor where I taught college algebra. I was really good at math in high school and in college where I made up in my mind that teaching was what I wanted to do. The pivot came when the first semester of college didn’t go as I thought I wanted it to, and I end up flunking out my first semester. The next semester came around and I had a Theater class as an elective and it dawned on that acting was what I really wanted to do.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal for my journey is to simply create some stability for me and my family. All while inspiring other as well as younger people to chase their dreams. I’m from a small town where resources are limited but I was so determined to have better. I jumped of the porch to go get the life I wanted.
